Will you be able to remember which is which in battle? This is better to be kept as simple as possible.

totally agree, mabe I have not made my point clear:

I make some assumptions and give some examples:

Emoticons _above the tank_:

Casual:

- Hello

- Goodbye

- Thank you

- Good job! / Nice shot

- (more to come)

Battle info:

- Heal me/help me

- Attack with me / follow

- (more to come....)

So.. back: emoticons over tank:

Each one looks different.

You type "!heal" and your right battle info emoticion updates with a red-cross-heal logo.

You type "!nice" and your left casual battle info emoticon updates with a thumb up

This works no matter which chat (team/battle chat) you type it in.

And is is clear and simple.

My enemies can per default only see your casual emoticons.. while my teammate sees both above my tank.

-

Emoticons in chat:

Emoticons like "enemy attacks left" are not usefull above my tank. Everyone has to read it, not only the ones who see me.

Same goes fot stop, ready, go.. therefor emoticons in the chat would be usefull.

Chat emoticons visible to all:

- !stop = stop/pause game

- !go? = ask if ready

- !go! = commit start

Visible team internal only:

- atack left

- attack right

- attack center

- defend left

- defend cetner

- defend right

- all go

- all defend, ...

Also here it is no matter in which chat you type them.

As each emoticon needs its own command.. the system can "know" to whom to present it.

I think this is very simple and straight forward..

all you need to remember are the commands (which you need to remember anyways).

What do you think?

Communication system is made simpler = more people using it.

Besides, we do not need to replace EVERY communication with icons, aren't we? Only most versatile.
For example — 'yes/no' is simple and versatile. 'place mines at' is not.

Though I am looking forward to making as many icon options as possible, basic set should be tight. And versatile! If you want to ask for help you might use 'exclamation mark'+'attack', if you want ask to drug you might use 'question mark'+using any suppliy and so on. Making it possible to add/remove/change basic set of icons is whole another idea.

Good point. I kind of forgot it was supposed to be in icons and intended for my words to be used as actual quotes appearing above the tank.

I'm really not sure how to depict the most needed citations as small icons. For something like "yes/no" it's quite obvious, but more complicated things like directions, instructions and information, will be very difficult to clearly show with pictures.

If we're talking about only pictures, then I would limit it to basic communication, such as Hello, Goodbye and smiley faces. To be honest, I'm not even sure how you could show something like "thanks" or "well done" in a picture, but you're the one with the artists - you decide  :)

> says tanki is not like other games

> tries to make it like other games anyway

You mean like WoT and WT? This is not how I would like to see it.

Icons and messages in these games are 'realistic'. You better use voice chat to communicate, while similar short message system is something like... well... just another way to communicate. Rarely I have seen anything but "roger that!" been used.

While in TO this might be whole another story. We can't add voice chat for a while. And we are not keen on realism. So, why not make communication with bubbles and stuff? Again — this should be done to reinforce idea of player being a tank. Seeing other tanks adequately responding to my actions with emotions and text balloons will convince me as a player to believe in idea above.

This is to make tanks feel ALIVE, maaaaaan.

This is why I am not really like what Rohrmeister suggesting. I do not care if someone on a battlefield orders me around. But I would be interested to see some emotions from tanks, as long as I know there are people behind them. Chat emoticons seems like whole other idea. Besides, I am not really liking it. Making chat into smiley-fest is.. vulgarly i'd say.

You might not need to! If this is much complicated than a simple picture, than you might do better using chat instead. A 'chat-bubble' over your head will draw desirable attention to your words. While simple icon of 'attention' with exclamation mark might do the job in most cases.

I see.. you aim for another target. Now I got your point.

So if we don't coordinate, we simply "talk" and express emotions.. like beeing pissed, upset, gratefull, ...

Then you don't need to differentiate between my-team-only and both-teams visibility, don't you?

In the chat I don't need emoticons either.. I just liked the idea of having universal communication there to coordinate the battle.

I would preffer a system where you enter a shorttag and it translates to the users languages. This concerns around the commands I proposed for the in chat messages above.

But this is another story and has - as I now got your point  - nothing do do with your proposal here.

What you want is done best by voice chat. Clans are using voice communicators better than anybody else. Though, voice chat in random teams most of the time being used for offencive language (remember xbox, lol), rather than battle coordination, we will eventually introduce it to the game.

While this suggestion is, really, whole another story. The Idea is to make it belivable that tanks are alive.

but reallly, tanks aint alive :P

Don't you feel the pain when they destroy your tank under gold box, lol? :D

Don't you feel the pain of other tanks when you do the same to them?

Tanki is different in this regard. This is like cartoon about tanks. Everybody likes believable cartoons.

Personally I'm not a fan of emoticons popping up over everyones tanks.

There is only so much info you take in visually as it is, I find the notification " kills, /flag/point cap/loss" at the top and side of active window are annoying occasionally, and can disrupt my focus on the battle, but the info can be good at the same time.

I am trying to see where all other tanks are, friend/foe on map, as well as health of team mates. Battle chat is where I want my important info all in one place in a language I can understand.

I do however want to know if a team mate is in garage or paused by a visual aid.

The whole idea is to communicate with players in their native language, right now that's, English, German, and Russian.

I want all my info in battle chat, with as few other distractions as possible.

A quick list with 1 click posting is to me the most important feature, to get the message out as fast as possible, and get back to battle.

Any good player can read the battle situation visually and fulfill the required role just with common sense.

You can't have 6 or 10 players trying to lead battle.

I think emoticons would only be a novelty item and used for fun, like Happy, Mad, ROFL, Charge!, and Danger.

Just another way for nubs to fool around and not concentrate on the battle.

As it is, if I see 2 or 3 just chatting away in the chat, I find another game.

I suppose you are planning to do this idea around the release of the Unity version? :D I don't see how Flash player could support your idea, if what I am imagining is correct.

I know, therefor I introduced voice comminction in the clan I used to lead. But without a lot of discipline, it turns useless imediately. So to share a voice channel with non-clan members/nonfriends is not usefull.

For the chat they at least have to pause gaming to type.. so flodding is limied by the desire to drive around. On voice they just talk and talk and talk... xD

But as you say - other story

Well, if you are looking into adding icon bubbles AND text bubbles over tanks, then I'm all hands up for it.

P.S. As well as adding a symbol indicaing that someone is on pause or in garage/lobby it would be very useful to have one for when someone is typing in chat.

It would look way too immature to have bubbles poppoing up above every tank though.

you'll have the option to turn them off, if they distract you or otherwise cause displeasure.

Seriously, this is not what I picture in my mind. It would be awesome to see those like in Metal Gear series.

OK, you got me, I was possibly a little melodramatic, but the need for more detail would make your case understood better.

Could you whip up some visual ideas, on how we would see it in a battle pic.

The thing with having them on the tank is you have to be in visual range, if you are at other side of map or behind a building no one will see your message.
