Reviving a Map | Map Awareness Month

 Share

Recommended Posts

The Tanki Online servers have a plethora of maps to chose from; however a significant amount of which are played more often than others. *sappy piano tune kicks in* Give some other maps a chance to earn your play. Show the popular cards that they are not the only fun ones in the game!

I should write for those animal abuse commercials, right?

You may not see this as being a problem, but it is to those who feel the enjoyment of the more popular maps is running thin, more likely the veteran (multiple year) players. Regardless, of that, you may be able to relate to the cause; the two purposes of this sort of campaign/event is to:

  • Spread awareness that playing the same maps month after month will gradually reduce the enjoyment of the game, without you realizing it. Its time you buck up and try other maps and be patient when starting.
  • A side point that I'd like to throw in because Its something I do and its why I'm passionate about this aspect of the game. Mapmaking and how it can be a great opportunity to express artistic abilities in something other than Photoshop. It used to sort of be a thing. I dabbed back into the past with a layout by richy9905 found here. Here is the raw Google Sketch up version:

I interpreted and pieced it together with TO props

I promise I'm better at controlling a tank than that.

This is Map Awareness Month. You are to post your results/golds of a battle that took place in a less popular map here and explain why it was enjoyable/why other people should play it. Or you can take a shot at making your own Tanki Map with a detailed description.

Idea topics that aim to promote the use of unpopular maps:

Map rotation/cycle

Improved Fund Distribution and Battle Balance

Why Are Large Maps Upopular?

Idea for rebalancing maps

Over the years I've played battles on every single one of Tanki's maps. I would like to describe some of the rarest maps and give players an insight on the variety of gameplay tactics they can discover when playing on something other than Sandbox, Polygon, Serpuhov or Silence.

Berlin

The second biggest map in the game after Dusseldorf. Unlike Dusseldorf, this one isn't a flat, boring arena with a bunch of identical buildings arranged in rows. There asymmetrical bases make gameplay different for each side, so you have to use different tactics depending on which team you are on. The map suits all kinds of equipment and play styles. You can camp with Shaft or Rail and shoot enemies across the whole map, you can attack right down the middle in a medium tank or sneak into the enemy territory via the outskirts.

Camp

A very unique map with reverse flag placement. For many years this map was solely meant for TDM matches, where player bases were on the two different islands and no bridge connecting them. The only thing in the centre was a flat platform, where one could jump down and the only way off was death. Now, the extra bridge connecting the two islands has created a map with rather unique attack strategies. You really have to think hard about when you attack, where you attack, who goes first and when to return your own flag to capture the enemy's. Great for practice with friends if you have voice communication.

Chernobyl

A great map, where you have to carefully think about your surroundings and be aware of the enemies' positions. The whole map is divided into three main sections - the top floor of the reactor for long range guns to rain fire on the enemy base; the elevated bases with flags, where defenders often hide behind the nearest building; the bottom area, where attackers carry flags. The large structure in the centre (the nuclear reactor) provides great cover for attackers, especially with short range guns. You can grab the flag, run into the tunnels, hide behind the corner and ambush any enemies when they follow you inside. Players with Shaft often prefer to stay on their side of the map, opposite the flag, to shoot attackers as they come up onto the platform to grab the flag.

Deathtrack

One of the biggest maps with an interesting layout. Great for players with light hulls, who just like to do blitz attacks on the enemy base and run away on high speeds. The multiple ways of approach allow you to easily navigate between obstacles to choose the best way of attack in order to remain unseen and to take the least damage.

Esplanade

One of the highest maps in the game. Has three main ways of attack, each one unique in tactics required for approach. The special abilities of different guns can really come in useful here when used by skilled players. A carefully positioned Freeze will be great for defense, but any good Thunder or Rico can easily take out the defense on the flag from a safe distance, using walls to their advantage. Firebird can be used to burn a whole bunch of enemy players at the flag, when they all pile up together. Shaft or Railgun can be used for sniping on the outside fields or from the top. And last but not least - this map is great for effective maneuvers when you grab the flag, escape through the top and jump down while doing barrel rolls at the same time.

Factory

One of the newer maps, which was quickly forgotten after it was added. The map has three ways to attack - directly through the centre for the tough ones, from the top for the strategic ones and around the edges behind buildings for the sneaky ones. Play on it yourself and choose your own strategy.

Future

This map was added at the same time as Factory. Very interesting layout with many levels of action - on the rooftops, on the bridge and on the ground. The map is relatively open, so you can freely choose which way you want to attack from to get the most out of it. Good map for all types of guns and light-medium hulls.

Gravity

A very unique map that looks like a mix between Madness and Noise. Gives players an opportunity to do some crazy platform jumps and amazing ninja attacks on the enemy base. Great practice for those, who want to learn how to shoot accurately when you and your opponent are on different levels and at an angle to each other.

Gubakha

Very confusing but interesting map, where the respawn areas are all limited to a small boxed in area on the side of the map - one for each team. The map is square and the respawn zones are located so that once you spawn on the red team, the blue flag will be on the opposite side of the map, the red flag will be on your left, while the blue team spawns will be on your right. On the blue team this is reversed - the red flag is still on the opposite side of the map, but red respawn is on the left and the blue flag is on the right. Enter the map and see for yourself :)

The design of this map also allows for different tactics. You can occupy one of the two camping zones in the corners of the map and snipe people from there, you can hide in the trenches and ambush unsuspecting enemies, you can try and go after the flag over and over, you can sit in the centre of the map and control all movement around you, or you can sit near the flag and strategically place mines. The choice is yours.

Industrial Zone

One of my favourite maps. Lots of different pathways through holes in walls of buildings or through tunnels and off jumps. If you know this map well, then you will easily be able to confuse your disoriented enemy as you jump in and out of various gaps and hop through passageways all over the place. A new player won't even be able to find the flags when they enter that map for the first time, so do take the time to learn the map before you try and play a battle there.

Other interesting rare maps:

Lost Temple

Magistral

Molotov

Novel

Red Alert
Rift

Scope
Skylark
Solikamsk
Tribute
Wolfenstein
Year 2042
Zone

What we really need is a club where we create battles on rare maps every day and play on them together.

Anyone remember this beauty?

Absolutely agree, I'll spread the word around the server chats.

Awesome, thanks!

Great descriptions. I think Valley is also very similar to Camp in the way you combat the opponent, although much more compact. Both would make interesting XP matches.

Its sad how Factory and Future died. They are both medium maps. I don't see why the multiple levels of play could be such a problem but thats my only hypothesis on why they've been forgotten. And they're the most recent player made maps in the game so show some love for and .

We (MMC) have a separate group in the works, stay tuned)

I create battles with rare maps always after server restart but after they end players leave and just play some more silences ._.

Its unfortunate. Try playing with friends so the opposition will always see a target, and a reason to stay.

Honestly I like the rare map better than a popular one.

My most favorite map, is Highway, Future.

And I very like Factory, Industrial Zone.

And the most want to play is Deck 9? (I forgot) and that beauty map, Valley? (I forgot too)

Why I miss that? Coz I used to want to play at there, but it not popular. At that time I still can find them in battle list, but as i rankup, the battle match become more less than used it be, and it has reached to the point "Hopeless" to see that map played at my rank. And before I know it. It already been removed :(

Honestly when I compared above map, I really dont like silence, sephurov, noise, highland.

I still remember how excited when I explore new map when I still low rank. I miss it that time.

I reaaly do want this.

Tanki should give this map turn on permanent on battle list. It should give chance. Even if this give low chance, but it still not zero chance.

Basically the rare map is harder than popular map, as those have much lotter corner or turn than a popular map. But a higher rank player should have eneough skill to play at harder map. but in reality. fuih. I started to think the most high rank player is not have skill :3

But honestly, i super rare to make battle and wait. Its boring. :(.

Maybe that is one of cause why rare map exist from first place

Just sharing my heart, ah sorry i miss read thread starter post.

I dont have any result or gold box screenshot.

Why I like Highway, Future, Factory, Industrial Zone.

Coz its need drive skill. hide skill. alot of strategy u can make here.

Its best to use light hull there, to the point use mammoth it not effective.

Its chase or run or hide map here XD.

Basically its harder, but its fun.

I support that. I don't change change an Industrial Area DM with 3 Polygon CP

I don't change 9 Polygon CP with one Magistral CP

I don't change 5 Polygon CP with one Madness CP

I don't change 250 kills with a battle which I did with a pro shafter.

Battles From Yesterday:

Lovin' the update to Forest. Sorry for finishing early, our first place guy just had to end it.

Had some fun in Factory, which died soon after implementation.

SCYTHE's gold, to which he promptly left afterwards.

Basically its harder, but its fun.

Always grants a challenge for the those who think they're the more skilled. Put them in an unpopular map and watch them fall!

Man i love  Gravity so much.

Sad that it isn't very common.

I've not tried it since its been updated. I'll have to check it out.

Your phrasing was a bit hard to understand but I think I get what you're saying; you wouldn't trade up a Madness CP for a few Polygon CPs? Or would rather play Madness CP over Polygon CP?

Updated. Added links to other Map related topics.

I would rather Madness CP. Even Madness CP is one of the most broken CPs, It is fun. :)
