Players should be able to see the shield things with protection values without joining. Then they will be able to see if it is a good idea to join. Also make the matchmaking system not pick too many players with protection from a single turret for one battle.

You want to enter a battle and there's only 2 slot left, one on each team. You sit there mousing over 18 names to see what everyone is using. By the time you're done viewing everyone in battle, there's no slots left. 

 

If you decide to do this at the beginning of a battle and other players are joining, you may find yourself too busy viewing new players just joining the battle and, again, you are left out. 

 

Don't forget, as a battle goes on, players are coming and going and changing tanks and turrets. So, what you thought would be mostly fire and freeze suddenly turns into Shaft, Vulcan, Railgun and Magnum. Battles don't necessarily remain static.
