How do i tell/convience my parents that i dont wanna get graduated/dropout?

This young man asked for some advice. As an adult, I gave it to him. Instead of criticizing me, why not help him? Yes, it's lengthy, but he is about to make a move that will affect him for the rest of his life. That is nothing that can be said in a couple sentences. I didn't think he gave this move enough thought. I tried to give him some direction. What did you give him?

Same goes for you. What sound advice did you give him?

Actually my post was not directed at your post, but the unexpected humorous affront that I was greeted with after reading your lengthy advise, which I thought to be sound, and realistic.

P.S. To answer your question. My advise was directed at the reluctance blasterbros exhibited in communicating with his parents. I have no Idea what his income or current home life is like, so I stuck to a basic reply. For all I know, blasterbros could be the richest aspirant on the face of the earth, with two of the greatest parents who ever lived.

Peace… :)

Honestly, just get through high school. I'd presume you know that a high level of education allows for greater stability in life. You said you're reading to hustle and fall down a lot, but you can't always get back up if you don't have the resources. And once you've run out of resources you will wish you didn't drop out. Just complete High School and get a college degree. You don't have to like the job, but you need the job to make money to survive.

If he has a good source of income , then consequently his parents will have no reason to object to him
Dropping out, and if they do it's of little consequence since he can support himself from there on, come on
That is obvious !!!.

If the sentence securing a good source of income is ambiguous for you then nothing is
Obvious to you, even the sun !!!!.

Instead of thinking of all these ideas, why didn't you act upon them or start working in that direction before graduating from high school? It's during this period your parents would have realized your true potential. But that time has passed. So far, you have shown your parents nothing. (or that's what I assume).

Here's my take on it. I'm a parent of a child much older than you. However, if he came to me at 17 years old and informed me that he didn't want to go to college, but instead, start up his own business, I'd have to ask a lot of questions to determine how thoroughly his plan was thought out. If he came to me and told me that he had been thinking about this since he was 14 years old and has come up with 106 different ideas, talked to some people about their problems, got some positive feedback and that's what I want to do.

Here are some questions I would ask him:

1...What type of business venture are you looking at?

2...You said if I gave you the money I had intended to spend on your education, you would pay it back. What guarantee do I have that you could pay it back?

3...You said you won't fail. Failure is a part of life. Everyone fails sooner or later. So, if your first business venture doesn't work out, then how many of those 106 ideas will you have to go through before you find something that works? There is a limit to the money.

4...It takes at least 5 years before a business starts showing it's full potential and realizing a small profit. How do you intend to support yourself during that time? Are you going to be that 30 year old guy, still living at home, still being supported by his parents, while you are still trying to find your niche in life?

5...You said you want to go to the USA to "talk" to people. Will you be coming back home? If so, when? Where are you going to stay? How will you take care of yourself? That college money goes just so far.

6...What's your back up plan? A lot more businesses fail than become successful. How many businesses will you try and fail before you finally give up in frustration? The money is already spent. Now what? All you have is a high school education. How far do you think that's going to get you?

7...Since you have no idea what it is you're going to do, then it's obvious you haven't done any marketing research. So, you don't know if you are going to market your idea in reality or in virtual reality (aka: online marketing).

Well, the questions are almost boundless, but I think you get the idea. At this point, you have no market, you have no plan, no back up plan, no education to fall back on, no money, except what's in your college fund. With the trip to the US, living expenses while your there and starting up a business, that money is spent before you even get started. All you have to bring to the table is 106 ideas.

Sure, you may have heard or read about someone that started a very successful business with only a dollar in his pocket and is now a billionaire. But what they don't tell you is that they had investors lined up who were willing to finance the business venture. And, sure, you may have heard about a child that had an idea and now that idea is a multi-billion dollar business. But do you know why you hard or read about them? Because it's highly unusual, not the way things normally go. It's all a matter of luck, being in the right place at the right time, talking to someone who believed in you.

Personally, I don't think you have thought this through very well, or not as well as you think you have. Are you going to sell a product or invent a product? You may have talked to a one or two people who would buy your product, but one or two people does not make a business that is going to pay the bills, put food on the table, support a wife and children. pay the taxes not only yours, but those of the business, too.

Your Dad has a 9 to 5 job because he knows that at the end of the month, he's going to get a paycheck. That very paycheck that gave you all the things you needed and wanted as you grew up from an infant. The very paycheck that was going to send you to college so you can have a good start in life. Something you can use to get you that good paying job.

I don't know your financial situation. Maybe your parents have bottomless money bags. I do know this, your parents love you very much and want nothing but the best for you. They want you to be successful in life. To have a good job, a good home and all the nice things that go with it. They have sacrificed themselves so you won't fail. Don't throw that love away. Make your parents proud of you and your accomplishments. Make your parents say, "See that young man over there? He's my son and I'm very proud of him. He will go far in this world."

I'm not trying to discourage you, your creativity, your ideas and dreams. All I'm trying to do is get you think a lot further down the road, than you have. My advice to you is to get that education, it may be the last chance you have. Get a 9-5 job, put some money away in bank. Give this idea of yours a lot more thought. Have a plan, a viable plan, one that works. I know that's not what you want, but life is full of things we don't want, but have to accept. You're young, you have a whole life time ahead of you. Don't throw it away. Please.

You wanted advice. well that's mine. Take it or leave it.

first secure a good source of income , then tell them you are droping out weather they like it or not
Will not matter if you have a good source of income.

First let me cover one more thing about me,which I forgot. I don't have any financial problems, ive been into the stock market since age 14 and ive actually made a lot. My dad also has personal connections with John Doerr a big Venture Capitalist who has invested ton loads in google, amazon and this list: https://www.crunchbase.com/person/john-doerr/investments

please calm down we all have different opinions on things

now for the others i agree with them besides talking to your parents you also need to see what and if your idea or product can be used ..

you will need $$ for  start up costs.. for materials and things .. once you figured out on those hidden cost ..you need to really see if your idea is worth the cost to make or do ..

for example baking cakes .. you need to get a bulk order for supply company.. the pans and tools involved then a good oven you can use and location to decorate them.. then take orders to have product and samples in hand to get feed back on them .. once all is in place it takes up too about 5 years to see any money come back to your pocket.. due to most have to pay for hydro / water advertising and petrol / car insurance and vehicle  for delivery's and any other things .. sure you do get some of this money u invested back into your pocket when tax's are done ...but not really much when you need to put as much as you can back in to cover for the next years orders... also you need to have fall back $$ if you have a slack period of no orders ..or any unexpected surprises along the way ..

start out small like part time and work yourself up  .. you think big too fast you could get out of control and over buy things that you have no need for .. then your stuck with items that you have to give away for free ...

if your wondering if I have been in business .. the answer is yes I'm now on our 5th company.. why so many ..due to 2 of them were with family buying houses and back when i was 19 some of the family decided to pull out due to marriage and starting family's... so my investment went to another company with husband repairing small engines ..then opened home renovations and closed that about three years ago  due to husbands medical issues .. we are no doing a part time seasonal company at Christmas doing events for children's party's and yea making good money ..and enjoying spending time with the children..

starting any company takes time and commitment ..

INTRODUCTION: So here I am 17 year old, about to finish my high school, I live in India.I am obsessed of being a successful man in my life about 3-5 years from now, i don't wanna be just another average guy going to college trying to get some degree and later work @ a 9-5 job. I hate that life. Me as a 17 year old,i have brainstormed many startup and business ideas which when put into work will have a massive potential. I have done lot of surveys and asked many people about what if there is a product or service which can solve this particular problem of yours.. They answered me and the response was pretty great and I got some hope that my ideas are worth putting into action. I have thought about 106 different business/startup ideas since I was 14 years.

PRESENT: Now im no longer interested in studies and getting a degree, in about 4-6 months I must pick a college and a degree and peruse it for about 4-6 years,i don't like the educational system at all. I really wanna spend my time reading books, gaining as much as knowledge I can and bring my ideas into execution and start working on them.

PROBLEM: I wanna open up to my parents and say that I don't wanna do higher education, mom&dad how much ever the amount your willing to spend on me for next 4-6 years for my education.. please give it to me and im a return it to you with massive interest rates,i wanna spend my first 2 years learning courses, reading books, attending workshops, investing in myself and traveling to america where I have really good connections with public figures like - caleb maddix, mattmaddix, ryanOdonnel,GrantCardone, etcetera and I wanna meet mentors and talk to them and read their books, then in the next 3-5 years I wanna startup business and become a successful man who is only addicted to success, ill either win or learn ill never Lose.

MY RESEARCH AND MORE INFORMATION: The journey to the exception life is not at all easy, you need to hustle a lot. And yes I wanna/i am ready to hustle what ever it takes because i don't wanna be that guy like my dad going to work @ 9 n coming home @5 all in all leading an average life. I am ready to fail as many times as possible and as fast as possible so that i can learn and get up fast.

Please help me I'm in dilemma and many are like me out there. Please help me guys.

And can you guys please leave any external advice like, your advice on life/business/growing up/what lessons you have learnt. And also please recommend me a book to read on categories like-entrepreneurship,startups,life,hardwork/smartwork. (not these books: Rich dad poor dad, think and grow rich,Intelligent investor, the alchemist ive already these)

And one more thing:

let me cover one more thing about me,which I forgot. I don't have any financial problems, ive been into the stock market since age 14 and ive actually made a lot. I have the exact same attitude as you, the problem is that success can't be predicted, it can only be earned by determination, there is no guarantee that any brilliant idea will turn into a successful business, either it works or it doesn't

I would say that if you are confident with pursuing your interests then you should go ahead, however if you feel that you may need a degree to support your future interests should circumstances change then it is definitely worth considering, there comes a point where you won't be able to turn back and make the same choice again

Anymore advices and suggestions!!?? Please I need more, cause it's gonna be my First independent decision that I would take...

Future is in your hand, you are the one who chooses it not your parents. Parents always want the best for you and your life.

If you do not want to continue studying , it is a kind of hurting them you know, so better to study and at the same time you can also do your bussiness.

You have to think that there are many people in this world who do not have the chance to study and they are struggling to study but in your case, you have what they dont have so, try to grab this opportunity it might be useful for you in the future.

We all have 24 hours/day, just know how to use it efficiently, you will get both.

Good luck.

Hey man...I'm your fellow mate from India too. I'm guessing you're expected to give JEE or what? In any case, I can totally relate to you because just like you, I have been extremely 'out of the box' guy since childhood. However, I am not as fortunate as you to have gotten the exposure and opportunities to test my potential and prove myself in any way. Hence, I have to go through the convenentional system.

If you're dead set on this, then I don't really want to stop you, but I do have some arguments on why you should go to college. Firstly, college, especially a few selected ones here like IIT's, NIT's, BITS, IIIT, etc give you immense exposure to people and opportunities. By attending various fests and workshops, you get to experience it all first hand. You'll meet tons of people and get loads of ideas. Believe it or not, you will also find tons of people who are similar to you. I'm sure you are not oblivious to the countless number of Indian startups; including some multi million dollar corporations like Flipkart, Ola etc. The thing is, rather unfortunately, this world judges you by number: Your marks, your salary, your net worth, blah blah blah. I don't think India is anywhere near western countries in terms of non conventional career paths at young age. I won't go deep into this issue, but my point is that going to college gives you a great platform and not force you into 9-5 conventional job (Talking about the good colleges). If however, you choose to drop out even before college, your troubles will be multiplied not just because of potential failure of your projects, but due to unwillingness of people who will invest in you. A college degree (or even a college tag) will fetch you things you'll otherwise spend lots of time to get. After all, even Zuckerberg dropped out of college, and not before it.

Another thing is, that if you fail over and over again, you'll lose investors exponentially. Even if the idea is great, no one would want to invest in a guy who hasn't can't show any proof of having basic education and to top it, has failed before. I'm not trying to discourage you, but that's the harsh reality.

On the positive side, if all goes well and you do alternate courses, travel to US and meet people through workshops or such, you could have a great time and a great life. Going by your precious experience in stock market and your attitude in general, I'd say you'll manage any trouble that comes your way. Of course, it's always easier said than done. But ultimately, it's your choice.

Do remember that your parents only want the best for you. So, if you tell them how much this means to you and that you're confident about this, I'm sure they'll consider. Good luck. :)

Wow thanks a lot mate, but my problem is can't get through exams ive applied for them for the sake of my parents, forcing me to write multiple exams of multiple colleges, but the thing is I don't get interested in studying,if I try to study I just can't focus enough I've tried many ways, hacks, saw some tutorials on how to study concentrate nothing just works for me.. :-(

its easy college is type of learning process.... where u take classes for different fields....just go to ur dad n say i have interest in business management or investment skills.... there are many courses offered by private universities for business learning skills....just tell ur dad what u told us here.... afterall he's ur dad.... n if u r confident of ur talent then surely he will be with u....

for example... there are many celebrities who did college for formality but there main work was to show their talent in their passion or lovable fields..... like many cricket players play cricket professionally n also attend college......but there parents dont force them to concentrate more on studies,,,, as parents know their child is gud in their lovable fields....

so u have to do the same thing bro....  :)

Perfect! Take this opportunity and succeed in everything you do. Think positively,  luck is important, but you still have to work very hard in order to succeed. Patience, diligence and ambitions constitute 90% of luck, that’s why I really wish you to find will in yourself and fight for what you really want. Good luck!
