Add a Sandbox Mode in Tanki Online

Recommended Posts

My suggestion is to replace the test servers with a sandbox mode which can be used 24/7 by all players, including developers to test out turrets, hulls modules and other equipment.

In sandbox mode, no crystals, experience points, battle fund or any other achievement can be earned, just like parkour battles and test server battles.

A sandbox mode would be much better than the current test servers and players would also be able to test out garage and shop equipment which was never purchased, but no game progress is made.

First of all, test servers are not a playground for the players, but a testing tool for developers and official testers, which they use to test new updates before releasing them on the main servers. They won't be removed as long as testing is necessary.

Although, I do like the idea of a sandbox mode, but do keep in mind that devs won't release such a feature just like the test servers. If anything, it would most likely be a paid feature that could be part of Premium Accounts, or a standalone pass.

That's exactly what they're used for by the players

It might not be what was intended, but its what goes on that matters.

Evidence? Just look at the 'Test Server Watch' topic created, with the sole purpose of informing players when their favourite sandbox is open for them to mess around in, live their tanki dream for a few play sessions only for the server to close and they trudge back to the harsh reality of normal tanki...

The sandbox mode suggested would be ok, but I think it could cut tanki revenue, which is the last thing they need, since some players may think - "oh, I dont need to buy to get all the stuff I want, Ill just go onto the sandbox mode and play with it there instead", which retracts from its original intended purpose of being an equipment and update testing tool.

paid feature, standalone pass.

Hence, it probably would have to be a paid feature to ensure potential loss of income.

As a result, since it is most likely to be a paid feature, instead of buying a "testing pass', you may as well buy some crystals/premium and get the equipment straight up (in a sale ofc, even if ur a buyer dont be stupid).

However, a testing pass will probably be cheaper than buying a full m4 garage, so again, I agree with Mafs idea that it could be a part of premium accounts. Players can , for a relatively cheap price, buy premium for 1 day, test out lots of stuff, and get double funds and 1.5x exp on their normal account, all while supporting the game. Seems like a win-win to me.

No equipment in this game is totally trash, so even if you dont like it, you cant really call buying anything a total waste.

(except paints  )

Doesn't matter what the players use it for. When test servers are open, it's always a load test to see if having the new feature on the server creates any issues when a lot of players are online. The fact that players can (sometimes) use it for personal reasons (e.g. for testing equipment) is an additional bonus, I guess.

In order for players to use the sandbox mode it must be free of charge, otherwise players will not use the sandbox mode it is purchasable like premium accounts or the pro pass.

Just remember that the sandbox mode must always be free and accessible to all players and developers 24/7.

I agree and disagree. Keep the test servers (or the hard-working server testers that work their butts off will lose their special Paint )

Definitely add the sandbox mode (always wanted to try out those overpriced and beautiful M3's  ).

That is very true, but if you kind of think about it, it is kind of like a playground, except the testers are using the "playground" for a specific reason, testing.

Why can't they be for both?

This is a good idea, but, if player gets fully M4 garage, it wont be good. My thinking is that it could be feature only for 1 day (example - every Sunday). That way, it wont make players just sit in Sandbox mode forever, but it will make them play thoughout week and "relax" on Sunday.

Also, it would be better if player could be only able to test modification they can buy at their rank (if I am General, i can test only M2s, and when i reach Marshal, i can test M3s and so).

*i think that players can test equipment if they get lucky enough when entering a battle, so due to that, put entry price for 1 battle [player rank]*10

*i took a break 1 year so i am not sure is that option in game or no

Why can't they be for both?

Because maintaining test servers for the sake of players gives devs minimal benefits at great cost. They are only open when testing is needed, and when testing requires the use of all garage items, then consider yourself lucky, since you get to test any M3 item for free :)

I have seen some computer games which includes a sandbox mode for testing purposes. The sole purpose to introduce such a feature in Tanki Online would be for testing turrets, hulls and modules from M0 to M4 without any limitations in crystals.

In sandbox mode, players would not spend any crystals to test turrets, hulls or modules of any modification but would benefit on learning how powerful they are and the number of HP for hulls when damaging enemies. The sandbox mode can be used as a training ground for players to develop better skills in shooting or maneuvering hulls or testing a protection module.

The sandbox mode will not add player's score, experience or any other rating to the game. It will only server as a training ground for testing equipment for players, and developers might consider on using it as well for the sole purpose of testing out updates like, for example, the matchmaking system and HTML5.

There is no wrong doing on having a sandbox mode added to Tanki Online. I believe that by having a sandbox mode added to Tanki Online will benefit both players and developers for testing out equipment and when updates gets released.

A sandbox mode will not need any pro pass, no premium account or any kind of purchase. Players from any rank, Recruit to Legend can freely use it as they please. Players will also not need to use an invite code as they do with the test servers. All they have to do is click on sandbox mode just like they do when enter a battle such as DM, TDM, CTF and CP modes.

How are developers going to use a sandbox mode to test upgrades and features if those upgrades and features are not implemented in the main game software? They use a separate server for tests because there they can test a modified version of the software.

Don't worry. All the micro upgrades for each turret, hull and module are available on the main servers, so players will be able to fully test them thoroughly on the sandbox mode as well.

The sole intention, not the purpose would be for testing. The purpose of anything is always decided by the players. E.g. intention of magnum - long range, high skill sniping turret. purpose of magnum - suicide bombing, hit and run, ruining noise games. Magnum is very rarely used as it was intended to. The same will apply to your sandbox mode. Players will stay in it all the time, as it gives them an opportunity to use all the equipment they want, without having to work for it/ buy it with real money.

Ok, fair enough

And, thats where youre wrong. Having a sandbox mode will not benefit devs, rather the opposite. They will lose revenue due to players not having to purchase items from the shop in order to get what they want, instead they can just pop into sandbox mode and use it there instead, free of charge

A sandbox mode will not need any pro pass, no premium account or any kind of purchase. Players from any rank, Recruit to Legend can freely use it as they please. All they have to do is click on sandbox mode just like they do when enter a battle such as DM, TDM, CTF and CP modes.

Do you even read what people discuss in your topic when you post an idea? It has already been explained by both Maf and myself why this feature, if implemented, will have to be paid, with real money.  Explanation below

Seems like a win-win to me.

The only way I can think of making this a non-paid feature is this:

All players will get 20 minutes of free sandbox mode testing every day. Players with an active premium account will have unlimited access to the sandbox mode. Players will ONLY be able to test equipment available at their rank in the Sandbox mode.Sandbox testing time will not stack up, and once the free 15 minutes is over, players will be kicked out of the sandbox server.

Explanation of the bit in red:

This is to prevent abuse of the system ,where players can make a new account every 15 minutes to basically get unlimited access to the sandbox server.

The 20 minutes can be adjusted as deemed necessary by the devs, but I think 20 minutes is a good time as it allows for the completion of one full non-PRO battle, which is the mode that the devs want the majority of the playerbase to be in.

Throughout all the years of TO, I think it's time to have a Sandbox mode (TO already has this but how about being able to do it online with other players), features can include using 5 speed boost at once which makes them faster for example, this mode is another way to debunk theories etc.

why not make a sandbox server and close down the test server for ever? this way, there wouldn't be this common rumor where the one guy knows the "code" to get into the server. also, people will be able to test out something before they get it, so there would be less "waste of crystals" and people wouldnt ask for a sell garage button

Do you understand what the test server is for and how it's used? It's necessary for testing new updates and features, and the only people with access to it outside of open testing days are developers and official testers. So a sandbox server/mode and the test server are completely different things.
