If you are writing something, and it doesn't get in to the newspaper, it simply means it doesn't fit their style and professionalism. So write what you enjoy, and let other players enjoy it.

Or if you are really desperate to get your work in, model your pieces after similar Newspaper articles. Not to the point of plagiarism, just to see what they are looking for.
