Authority In Tanki Online

Ah yes, I have returned. Top 10 Unfinished Prequels. I have realised that I valued 1,000 posts too heavily and the special feeling faded away after some time. So I'm here again, with a more aesthetically pleasing nickname and rank combination bringing this topic as my 1,000th post. I probably should have posted this earlier as there may have been more traffic that wasn't diverted to Tanki's birthday celebrations.

How exactly did/do you view authority (Chat Moderators and/or Administrators to be specific) in Tanki Online?

A week ago, I sought out to test hypothetical scenario. I went online and was changing my equipment when I saw that a few players needed their questions answered. I answered them and gave advice. One random player now decided to confront me about my "attitude" and told me to stop pretending like I was a moderator. Is it a case where I can't give advice to players unless I'm a moderator?

I sent two screenshots of myself trying to figure out why a player didn't like MM to my friend and he told me, "You speak with such authority, like if it's your domain". I looked back at it and I did sound a bit like that. Alright then.

Where I live, speaking Standard English to other citizens that are around my age comes across as awkward sometimes and it is not usually expected. Someone apparently thought that because I was speaking in Standard English to someone about the concerns they had, I was imitating a moderator. So it seems as if speaking standard English on the chat is imitating a moderator and should be bannable?

The player Jewgitive was the person who the guy who accused me of imitating a modetator was arguing with and he told me this:

 Standard-English.png

The majority of players (according to Jewgitive) speak Broken English so a trait exclusive to moderators is speaking Standard English?

I've seen other players get bashed for helping others with their concerns. Are we not to help each other?

Years ago, I viewed Chat Moderators as either good cops and bad cops. The good cops would assist players by responding to their questions and concerns, giving advice to them and would band player if necessary. The bad cops would be the ones who were silent and the main moderators who seemed to be doing the banning.

Now, I see them as players assisting others with their concerns and slaying the toxicity slowly but surely in the chats.

While writing this, I read the rules over again as I had thought I may have been breaking one of them. To me, it doesn't sound like I'm breaking any rules. The only rule it seems to come close to breaking is specifically Rule 4.4.

And on an unrelated note, please check out this topic in the Off-Topic Discussion sub-forum. I do believe we can get far with that. Probably a small % of the entire thing but that is far in my eyes.

Unfortunately it seems that using proper spelling and grammar in Tanki chats while also helping others is frowned upon by some players, which is completely absurd if you ask me. I don't know what goes through their minds and why they think that you shouldn't be answering questions, but I can tell you that helpers appreciate it when some tedious questions are answered by other players.

I don't know about the chat, but on the forum I love it when I open yet another topic titled "should i buy viking or hunter?" and I find that someone already provided the link to the right topic, so I can just quote their post and lock it.

I'm not sure what this has to do with "how do you view authority", and I would refrain from discussing that in this topic. For positive feedback we have the Compliment Book, while for complaints about helpers you should PM their respective admins.

Well, yeah, broken English - I learned to write that when I came to Tanki. But usually I write full English, and people often ask me why I don't have some sort of thing saying I'm a mod. Funny how people expect mods to have good grammar and players to not...

I speak broken English in the chat in the game only because I'm on my laptop and am just too lazy to manually use proper grammar. But I do respect those that put in the time to use proper grammar even in a game.

And yes it's ridiculous that many people assume that a person who is helping other players is "pretending to be a mod".

I'm only using proper grammar on the forum because I'm usually on my Amazon kindle, which has auto correct.

Hmmm, I wanted to see (from discussion among others) how players on the forum view and/or viewed authority. Those incidents I used were to show why I made the discussion topic and examples of how some players view them.

I won't risk gaining a warning point so I guess you can lock this one (I anticipated it).

I congratulate those whose Native Language is not English can speak so well. English is a difficult language to learn, I'm told, especially getting the right spelling for so many words that sound the same. Example: two, to, too...there, their, they're...whose, who's...and the list goes on. Some people whose Native Language is English don't seem to have a very good grasp. I see that many times on the forum.

My Native Language is English and I've been accused of impersonating a Mod in lobby chat. But it wasn't for speaking proper English, it was for correcting wrong information and warning those who were breaking the rules.

Keep up the good work on your English and don't let others discourage you. Again, I congratulate you.

English is hard to learn, but it can be understood through tough thorough thought though.

*Spitting cereal from my mouth*

And what, my Dear Sir, is your problem that you are having difficulty keeping cereal in your mouth? Spitting cereal from your mouth is improper etiquette and gross to say the least. Besides that, it makes a mess on your keyboard and monitor, of which I hope you cleaned.

Thank you very much for this observation, we worked really hard for years to change that perspective of players and I'm really glad we did it :)

I see chat moderators primarily as assistants of players, a team that is available to help & guide players on the chat. Other teams do the same, trying to be as helpful as possible while making sure to maintain the positive atmosphere in the community. And we all welcome any help from players - after all, this is the game we all play and enjoy and we should help each others to make community the best it can be  :)

Actually becoming a helper is something I would encourage exactly for this reason. I am also not a native speaker and perhaps the biggest benefit from this volunteering is the improvement in my English.

When I started playing this game, I could speak fairly well, but it just wasn't that smooth or natural English. Fast-forward a couple of years and here I am. I am not saying I do not make mistakes these days, but I feel that working in the helper circles gave me much more valuable things than Avatar, special paint or payments.

So, if you are helping in chat, forum or anywhere else, do not be discouraged by these comments. You're being nice and if your mother tongue ain't English, you are doing yourself a favor by using, learning and exercising it.

Oh, thank you so much for pointing that out. Now, how about you checking your spelling.
