What to do when Flash goes away

TL;DR: Flash is being phased out, but you still have a few options if you wanna play Tanki Online. Details below.

Tankers,

As you know, Tanki Online was built on Flash technology. Unfortunately, in July, the Chrome browser will once again be upgraded, and running Flash will become a bit more complicated than it is now. And it will also be more problematic.

We currently have a working HTML5 version of Tanki Online, but we’re not quite happy with its performance yet. So, we have been rebuilding the HTML5 version that —according to preliminary estimates— will work faster than Flash and than the current html5. Moreover, it will correct some of the so-called “early-life problems” still currently plaguing the game's architecture. In short, it will be faster, cooler and more stable.

However, the new HTML5 version is still in the works. So in the meantime, you’ll have a few different options for playing Tanki Online.

Option 1 - Game Client

The first option is the game client.

  1. Visit the Tanki Online homepage and click on the big «Download» button at the top right of the page. Or you can download the client directly from this link.

  2. Download and install the Tanki client. The Tanki Online icon will appear on your desktop.

  3. Log into your account with your username and password, and start playing. The client also has the option to remember your login details. Pretty handy.

Option 2 - Chrome

The second option is a bit of a headache, and you’ll only be able to do it AFTER Version 76 of Chrome is rolled out.

  1. You will need to go to Chrome settings, look for Flash and click on «Allow».
  2. Next, you’ll have to go to the Tanki Online homepage and click “Play”.
  3. When the game window appears, you’ll have to click on the padlock icon and click «Allow». And, every time you restart your browser, you’ll need to do the thing with the padlock again.

Yes, it’s a bit of a pain, but if you absolutely want to play on the Chrome browser, you'll just have to put up with it.

Option 3 - The current HTML5 version

Your third option is to use the existing HTML5 version. Remember, this version is not optimized, so it probably won’t work well on older computers.

All you need to do is click here, login and play.

You’ll notice some very minor differences from the Flash game — mainly the fonts. And remember, you’ll need a computer with a decent graphics card to run it.

So make sure you’re prepared with one of these three options in July, because with the Chrome update, Flash is expected to become problematic.

Some additional news

Once we launch the new HTML5 version, we also plan on re-working the game interface. It will be more informative, and easier to understand and navigate. The design will change both in the menu and in battle.

And keep your eyes on the news. More updates are coming soon.

Thanks for letting us know :)  I already play using the client so there shouldn't be any change for me.

That new interface looks good ^_^

I don't think it will be a big issue as the TO Client is very easy to use and people can move on to it, I'm really hyped for the new TO Interface, which is going to be the same as that of TO Mobile.  ;)

It's more complicated indeed, with Chrome, you'll lose a good number of players and their mults. Hopefully it won't be as complicated with Firefox, so you can offer it as an option.

In the new game interface, can you make "Paints" better organized.

       * visually easier to find a paint.

       * separate paints I own, I don't own.

       * Maybe add a feature for showing  my "Favorite Paints"

Right now, whenever I want to equip a holiday paint I have to scroll to and fro through plethora of paints, that I don't even know I own them.

Also, it would be wonderful to have a feature where I can store combinations of 'hull' + 'turret' + 'modules'  + 'alteration'(optional) + 'drone' (optional) + 'paint'(optional).  Please provide few slots to store a mix and match of above combinations. This will help us to 'one-click'  equip my preferred combinations from garage during the middle of a game (If I want to) and saves time. Also I would like to name my saved slots.

It's sad that Flash is going away forever. Had good times with it. :'(

I'll miss it so much.

#RIP-Flash

After HTML gets released you won't miss it, it'll be so much better  :D

Also the new Interface looks nice, just not sure whether it's suitable for computers or not, looks more like a mobile game interface

I am always using the game client since it has been released. However, I want to know if HTML5 will be available for use in the game client?

When remaking the new HTML5 version, please leave the trees and bushes out of it, and many camping shielding obstructions too.

Camping needs a big nerf, otherwise you'll keep losing non-camping team-oriented players.

Maybe make maps smaller, for 7 players, maps are too big and you can't make everyone happy, some sacrifices are needed. It should be okay that some turrets are not popular, some turrets need to be secondary turrets, don't try to balance them based on equipment usage or ownership.

You know, if turrets weren't able to oneshot heavy hulls from anywhere in the map (And unfortunately there are many, plus adding the 2 shot variants), maybe camping would be less encouraged.

Maybe you need to make a new topic with instructions and maybe videos to promote the use of the Client. It's the best option. It's simple but for some reason many don't use the client.

... screen shot of DA with RK description ...

This is a mockup screen shot; they copied the repair kit description. It might as well say "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..." as nonsense. The point is not to show you how that exact element will display on the new interface in detail, but rather what the UI as a whole will look like with a semi-plausible example. The is no/minimal code behind this.

I also have to give the feedback that this thread is excellent communication. Let's us know what is coming down the road, why, how all of us can cope with it, and looks forward to an even better way than we have today. Tanki is still working on fixing some of the original architecture, and no one should be surprised that some of the game's complaints can be directly tied to the Flash implementation and accompanying hacks to make it work.
