Is the sound being enabled worth it?

By default, my sound is disabled and has been disabled for many years in total. For me, it is not as simple as enabling the sound in-game would allow me to hear it in battle. I require effort to actually set up something so that I can actually hear the sounds.

@DieselPlatinum mentioned more than once that Mammoth's Overdrive is very loud, as well as Wasp's bomb ticking loudly.

What I usually do is make my own sound effects in my mind when playing. I have memories of how a lot of the turrets sound when shooting like Firebird, Freeze, Twins, Ricochet, Hammer, Vulcan, Thunder, Railgun and Shaft. For Isida, I remember it sounding as if I was being sucked into the vast emptiness of space very slowly with a dread undertone to it. it sounded something similar to Hypnotoad @ 0:58.

I actually don't know how Striker sounds when shooting 1-by-1 missiles. I heard in some V-Logs when it finishes acquiring the target, it clicks and then 4 exhaust blasts are heard. I assume that's how it sounds for 1-by-1 missiles.

I don't know how Magnum sounds when it shoots, and I've never heard that "whistle sound" that blares when an enemy Magnum shoots or is coming towards you. So all Magnum shots are surprise shots for me because I never see (or hear) them coming.

I make my own sound effects for Smoky's critical hit's electricity, Magnum's projectile splash, Striker's projectile explosion (only when I'm using Remote Rocket Explosives), Gauss' "high-pitched whistle sound" they talked about, Gauss' sniping projectile's splash and Smoky's projectile shot.

I have my own idea as to how Wasp's N-2 Bomb, Hunter's EMP and Viking's Beserk Reactor sound. I can't imagine how Mammoth's Overdrive sounds on its own. When it's damaging someone, I just imagine that i sounds like a welder welding.

So, am I missing out? Are what I recall and think the sounds are how it is? Is it worth it putting in the effort to hear the sounds?

I know that my sound being enabled is opening me up to surprise attacks from behind that could have been prevented. That is why I'm observant at almost all times of my surroundings. At random, I would rotate my hull and turret 360 degrees to get a quick peek as to if enemies are behind me or flanking.

You're not very far off with your guess with mammoth.

But I would say that it is very worth it to have sound enabled. It helps a lot.

I've never once played with the sound on. All I have to do is unmute the tab (I play on browser) but I've never seen the point. How does it help your situational awareness?

I wouldn't say that the sounds in Tanki are particularly amazing and you have to listen to them, but they do help immensely with gameplay, and I hate to play without sound. It helps to know when your flag is being taken, when there's shooting/engine sounds nearby (which you can't see), or when there's overdrives active. It also helps me play with Magnum, since I listen to the sound of the reload finishing so I know when I can start charging my next shot without looking down at the reload bar.

And of course, gold box sirens.

That's why I heightened my awareness and look all over the screen for as much information on the current situation my team is in. It's usually not a problem but sometimes, there is an information overload (especially when my team is being blown out) and I kind of miss a few details like a certain enemy's position.

I only use RGC Magnum right now so whenever I release a shot, (most of) my direct attention or my peripheral vision is on my ammo bar that is reloading.

The gold boxes are really the only thing that I think I miss out on sometimes. I could be going through the battle as normal and then suddenly, "Player162331 has taken the gold box". I would not recall seeing any notification at the top. That has happened many times and still happens. A lot of the time, I notice the message at the top because it's in my field of view, but sometimes, I really wonder if they dropped for themselves without warning.

That's impossible - even if they drop it themselves there will be a siren and notification saying either "Gold box will be dropped soon" or "[player] has dropped a gold box".

I have sound enabled, but not very loud (rarely higher than 8% on this PC). Sometimes I have it louder if nobody else is around.

Main advantage for me is knowing when a Smoky is hitting you (so move / hide) because the visual effect and damage isn't as obvious compared to other turrets.

Gauss noise is really annoying.

Enabling sound does increase your awareness of your surroundings. I only recently started to enable it for every battle, in the past I had it mostly disabled.

The sound you hear from activating a supply for example can reveal the presence of a nearby enemy about to attack with double damage (or just your teammates using them).

I always play with sound (And a soundtrack from yt usually), there are many sound clues as to what is happening in a match and it can help you locate an enemy or avoid a possible threat, maybe not always, but there have been plenty occasions where that happened.

And of course, gold box sirens.

I just realized something shocking. I have literally never heard a GB siren, even though I've heard so much about them. Am I missing out?

I almost never read the top of the screen, so it definitely helps.

The last time I heard one, it sounded like an air raid siren.

You can listen to it on the Wiki's page for Gold Boxes.

I think I heard the Christmas one. It sounded like bells and then Santa says "Ho Ho Ho" coming down to the end.

I remember that when you're beginner, the audio is off by default. I guess that explains why many newbies don't notice when the enemy is taking the flag, they spawn close by and go the other way the action is.

If you care about flags, rugby balls, and other actions in battles that could help you help the team, then sound is very important.

If you don't like too much sound, there's an option to disable background noise.

I personally disable it when using Twins, Gauss, or Ricochet because the sound of those turrets firing makes me want to file my ears off with a can lid.

One Twins wasn't so bad, but i can't imagine 3 Twins shooting at me. Does Twins' projectiles make a sound when hitting an enemy like Ricochet's projectiles do?

Not that I've noticed, but hearing pewpewpewpewpewpewpewpewpew infinitely instead of a steady pew pew pew is annoying.

It's cool when it's used with viking though.

Playing with sound disabled is just like reading a manga

It's like comparing Anime with Manga, obiously anime is way better, sounds are important

Also wasp's overdrive explosion is kinda disturbing, someone can have a seizure from it like whenever I see it, it just triggers me

still better than playing with no sound effects

I think M4 Twins is more seizure inducing.

A lot of times, especially when im spending consecutive hours grinding stars, I listen to music as I play. So obviously I have the sound off for Tanki.

2 cons to not having the sound up.

1) Gold Box Sirens

2) Nearby enemies placing mines
