Allow Hornet's overdrive to reveal all enemy mines

Recommended Posts

I know many people do not like this hull's OD, and I am not asking for it to be buffed, so hear with me please.

In my opinion, mines were used more strategically before the addition of the saboteur drone and the mortar alteration for Magnum, which have now enabled players to quickly mine large areas of a map and hinder the progress of an entire team. Mines have almost become as effective as having an extra player on a team.

Since there is a good chance any given team will have at least one Hornet (it is a pretty common hull), why not enable mine revealing to become something normal in battles, even if just for 20 seconds which is the duration of the overdrive. It could add another element of strategy in battles, by having players avoid areas heavily contaminated with mines.

I do not believe this would make mines useless. New ones can always be added after the overdrive finishes. But I would like to see a way players could counter them which does not involve spending loads of crystals for a module.

You are correct in statement that a lot of players have dislike for Hornet OD... but not sure which perspective you are taking here.

That it is weak?  Or OP?

But I disagree that being able to see mines is not a buff, and that mines won't lose effectiveness.  Hornet OD already is potent - IMO.  Does not need another capability.

I think this would only be feasible if hornets protection ignore gets nerfed down to 75% protection ignore.

Eh it's just a minor addition. Many players may even forget where the mines were after the OD is done.

Too OP. Which is why I said I didn't want it buffed.

Well allowing it to see enemy mines and not changing any other parameter technically is a buff.

Now, since I use Hornet mostly on this account these days, I have a dislike for mines, since they always seem to damage me on the lucky end of the spectrum, while my mines always seem to get on the average damage or below (it's really infuriating). My Hornet is just above 1,800 Hp, which is around the average damage for a mine. If I had 2,000 HP, I'd have more leeway to survive, but that is still 400 potential damage the mine could have to kill me.

If the Hornet just spawned and wants to use its Overdrive, it would use double damage. ANd if it's driving around to get to enemies, then mines can kill it. I've had instances where a random mine stopped me from massacring 4 players. If I see where the mines are, I can avoid it and massacre those players because I was able to survive when I wouldn't have been able to.

If this was to be implemented, leave it as a Hornet-only mechanic, and not for the entire team.

Aha you got me Congo. I realized it was technically a buff, but considered it rather insignificant and more of an extra gimmick, like Dictator's freezing ability.

The case you've presented has made me consider a drawback for it, probably just like you've said by only restricting it to the Hornet user and not the entire team. But I'm afraid that would make the ability rather unhelpful, because there's no way you can communicate with a mostly Russian team and try to convince them to avoid certain locations with mines.

Or just nerf it's protection ignore down to 75% instead of the full 100%.

That way I might survive a rail shot with falcon m4 and da

Something that last 20 seconds, has a relatively fast recharge rate, and is on one of the most popular hulls in the game doesn't deserve such an OP ability like completely ignore enemy protections.

Well I guess, but that decision is up to the developers.

Still, what's wrong with adding mine detection without changing anything else with the overdrive? Not every Hornet uses Railgun plus not all of them are skilled players. And like I said the effect would only last for 20 seconds and many would forget the mine locations after that. But it's good enough to at least give players a chance against them.

I wouldn't have suggested this idea if maps weren't littered with these things everywhere.

This is irrelevant to your argument.  There are also unskilled players that use Hunter - should we boost it's abilities because of that?

I'm not understanding your logic.  You indicate above you feel (along with MANY others) that Hornet OD is already OP. And now you want to add another capability to it?

Is it mines in general you dislike?

If so - maybe suggest Dictators "freeze" ability be replaced with this suggestion - anyone within range of it's boost has the detection abiity for X number of seconds...

No I meant that unskilled players are no threat so adding a new ability won't make a big difference and they won't make full use of it. Skilled players could, but not to a great extent because of the nature of the feature itself (just showing mine locations).

Hornet enables you to view all enemies and their health bars. Thus for my suggestion, revealing enemy mines is relevant only for this overdrive and not any other.

And for the last time, it's not a major buff, it's just something which can potentially help every team tackle the mine problem for a brief amount of time in a battle, nothing more nothing less.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with mine detection. I think it would be nice, but I also know that while they're on the topic of hornet, they should also nerf it's ability to ignore protections thus killing two birds with one stone (hopefully).

I understood what you meant about the "skilled/unskilled" part.  IMO, that is not a good way to decide to buff something.

I see. The damage ignoring aspect of its overdrive could go for a nerf, maybe. The problem is mostly focused on Railgun though.

It surely isn't. But remember that's not the main reason I want this. Player skill levels is a subjective topic, and it's up to each individual player to make use of any in-game feature.

Admittedly that point I made was pretty irrelevant , it was to justify why adding such an ability won't make the overdrive more dangerous.

Also I know it's a bit too late for this, but thanks Maf for marking this topic as valid.  :D

I don't know where this will go from here, but hopefully something could change for the better.
