Hi folks;

Many people struggle with spelling certain words. Obviously, there are applications that can help with this (such as Grammarly) but sometimes you write on paper, or don't have such features available, and you have to use your memory to spell. Most commonly used words you usually remember, but there are some that keep evading you. In this topic, submit a couple of such words. I don't mean hard words that never leave the dictionary, I mean only words you might use on any given Tuesday. If everyone submits at least 5 words, we can have a nice list.

Please be considerate of others that speak different variations of the English language, and words should be hard to spell on their own, not because there is a British way to spell it and an American way to spell it.

Maybe you can easily spell all commonly used words? Then this is the topic to complain about those annoying people that can't spell decent words for the life of theirs.

Enjoy.

is there a requirement for the words to be socially acceptable

If its not considered offensive, why not? If there word is not socially acceptable, then how is it used often? I guess you can decide to post it.

I sometimes have trouble spelling words like:

·(In)Appropriate (can't decide where to apply the second consecutive "P" at.)

·Tomorrow (can't decide if it has two "M"s or two "R"s.)

·(Un)Necessary (can't decide if it has two "C"s or two "S"s.)

This post belongs in topic

since it is how to properly abbreviate those words, not spell them out fully. It is a good point though.

The hardest word to spell-

pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

It is the longest word in English. It refers to a lung disease contracted from the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano; medically, it is the same as silicosis. It is also one of the hardest word to pronounce in English. Seriously, i just copy-paste it from google because i can't spell it. So, anyone up for impressing your English teachers by pronouncing and spelling this word? (that is, after the lock down and if you are in school like me)

edit: hey i figured out the pronunciation. Its-

new-mono-ultra-microscopic-sillico-volcano-coniosis

also i found another huge word. it is-

methionylthreonylthreonylglutaminylarginyl (sorry about the size)

It’s the chemical name for “titin,” a protein.

I've got 2 more but please don't report me for flooding as it will take space.

1) Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia

it is one of the longest words in the dictionary — and, in an ironic twist, is the name for a fear of long words. Sesquipedalophobia is another term for the phobia.

Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft

its the longest word in german with 80 words. it means- the Association for Subordinate Officials of the Head Office Management of the Danube Steamboat Electrical Services.

i know these words aren't exactly going to be used every Tuesday but it is good to know about them.

Your post therefore violates the rules of this topic. You are welcome to try again at commonly-used words.

Red color = false, green color = correct, yellow = different by country

Center = American spelling, Centre = British spelling

Meter = American spelling, Metre = British spelling

intrest or interest

goverment or government

separate or seperate

definately or definitely

publically or publicly

Recieve or receieve, receive

(I would also like to add this: color is American and colour is British, I've seen people complain about spelling color wrong and that it should be "colour")
