Matchmaking Balance

In the current state of Tanki Online, Matchmaking Is Not Balance.

There is one match for me in particular, it was on OSA Rugby mode. My team got 0 - 7 point and lose the match.

My team wasn't doing bad, all of them participate in the match with no one AFKs and trolls, same goes for enemy team.

What goes wrong is enemy team has better equipment, animated paint dictator shaft? hell yea, mammoth titan striker camp on objective? hell yea, wasp firebird RAINBOW shot effect? hell yea.

All the good stuff, sadly was on enemy team. After some calculation, enemy team Gear Score has 20k above our team, which mean however good my team does, we just lose.

I understand this is a free game. Free game here means I don't expect much from this game and I don't expect special treatment.

I understand this is pay to win. Pay to win here means player who pays the game will have a good time enjoying the game more compare to playing the game for free, and also have access to exclusive content.

But please have mercy on those who just want to play the game for free.

I felt guilty whenever my team using smoky one shot every enemy *excessively aggressive example*, and the game just went back to spawn killing massacre.

 

My suggestion was:

If the match has 10 minutes timer, prevent player from joining the match after 5 minutes timer. This way, player don't join the game when the game's already over.

Bot feature. Whenever a player leaves the match after the 5 minutes timer, add a bot in place of that player, if the player reconnect, remove the bot.

The bot doesn't need to be very powerful, but exist to keep the match going. Their equipment are base on the average Gear Score from that match.

Restrict on Gear Score limit. Make it so that both team have similar average Gear Score, if not, same. This way, there won't have a 9999 Gear Score with a 6666 Gear Score same time on the match.

 

These are just my suggestion, I don't know how will this impact the game, I just want to make the game better.

This certainly makes sense, however it needs to be given a time to think about. The bot feature is planned, we don't know whether it will be used for balancing MM as well, but there will be a bot system. Balancing MM is something that needs to be played with carefully, let's see what other players think.

Care to elaborate on that, maybe give some insight into how balance can coexist with the cash aspect of TO.

I have many ideas but they all get thrown on the tanki scrapheap, maybe yours will carry some weight with the devs, you being a mod.

Matchmaking is the biggest object in the game at the moment, its like the Eiffel tower to Paris, if you get me. This basically means any minor change can make an excessive impact on the gameplay, thus it needs to be played with carefully. You presented an idea of balancing Matchmaking, sure, I agree. But every idea comes with a negative side and a positive side. In this case I personally see no negative aspect, however players from different skill groups/equipment groups may. That is why this is Under review, I will wait a few days, see what players think and then come back with a verdict, if you would like to add anything, please do not hesitate to.

I'm sure you could find every post I have ever done regarding MM. Suffice to say I will not be reiterating my previous, numerous posts on the dreadful plight of TO and it's inability to solve this problem, a problem brought about by the devs themselves and which is now with every OP update they introduce to the game becoming more difficult to resolve.

TO is a mess and for MOST players unplayable. 

Anyone care to agree with me, even though I'm not a mod.

TO is a mess and for MOST players unplayable. 

As I said, the plan is to leave this here for a few days and see what players think, then I will share a verdict.

Oh well, my man, tell me does anyone code a game, hire people to work on it, pay money to the servers and employ people for its management, just for charity service? 

It is not about just Tanki Online. No game has ever been created to not earn bucks. There will always be a P2W aspect in any game. It must, for the very existence of the game. 

Kindly name one game, of this genre, which is perfectly balanced.

Oh and if you go through the history of declined ideas, you'll find that quite a handful belong to helpers as well. 

It isn't about "yours" or "ours", it never was. It is all about what your idea is. As long as you think that we decline ideas just because they are "yours" but not "ours", well you'll never really understand what's the fault in the idea. As hugo said, every idea comes with faults, nothing is perfect. But then why do we decline ideas? Nothing is perfect, right? 

Well, not all can accommodate themselves into the game right now. Tanki has been in the existence for 12 years now and it has something which is unique to itself. So changes which are way to drastic to its real nature, will obviously not fit into the game. Also there are times when the negative aspects far outclass the positive ones, which is when you have no option but to decline it.

Well, would you be so kind as to mention one such idea of yours, to fix the MM's problem?

My friend, I have Mk3 Turret, Mk3 Hull and I equip them. I unequip all my protection modules and also my drone. Now with this equipment, I fool the system and enter the battles of those with less GS and then I change my equipment, get my Mk8 Turret and Hull, maxed Booster, and all my protection modules.

Isn't this more dire?

How can you decide Augments from just GS? Adrenaline and EMP salvo for gauss, both contribute equally to the total GS. All drones have same GS(same level of MU). So what do you choose? Crisis or Brutus? How can you decide the protection modules from GS alone? All these uncertainties render such a bot feature, is pointless, at least in my opinion, in MM.

Adding bots feature to PRO battles is very much fine and perfect but in MM, at least the way our pal here has suggested, nope, I don't think so.

I am just a player, free to play player in fact.

First, not a single shooter game is 100% balanced. But there was some game that was 99% perfect. These game often being called skill based game. I see the difference in Tanki Online, Tanki Online offered a wide range of playstyle, close range(firebird), medium range(ricochet), long range(shaft). It is these multiple kind of feature limit and restrict the current Tanki Online.

Tanki Online to me does not required player to be skilled to be able to be good at the game. This is what makes Tanki Online special.

Second, I am just a player(consumer), I played this game because I think its good. A game that is good, will often have people who working at the game, communicate with their player. I, as a player, trying to communicate with the people who is working at this game, by pointing out the problem of the game, hoping that people who is working at this game noticed and attempt to solve this issue.

Tanki Online is a special game, unique. There was no other game that can replicate Tanki Online, and this is what makes it hard to balance the game.

Maybe all it takes was a bold move.

Would not say it was 100% balanced but close to perfect: Counter Strike, Rainbow 6, Apex. Clearly these was skilled base game.

 

Tanki Online Vlog was a good example where people who working at the game, communicate with players. But aside from the game it self, everything was pure silence. The cash aspect, the stats of the current Tanki Online, these two were the prime example of the developer being secretive.

The game still run on skills . Sure these extra perks helps oneself in the battlefield but in the end , it is ur skill that has the potential to change the tide of the battle.

I apologize if I made this too long, but it will worth your time so buckle up.

First, I want to say if this topic ever gone decline or invalid, I am both happy and unhappy.

I am happy:

The current Tanki Online Matchmaking is what makes Tanki Online, Tanki Online. This is the Tanki Online that we all know and love for the past decade. Even a little adjustment to the matchmaking would change the game completely, and I am happy it stays the way as it was.

I am unhappy:

Nothing changed. The problem is still there, we know the problem exist, we put it aside, turn a blind eye on it, and pretend it never happened. Like a caterpillar stuck in its pupa, and if there is anyone dare to poke a hole, the caterpillar might end up dying. No one dares to give suggestion about what to change. But if the caterpillar is brave enough, even one finger, it will come out to become a beautiful butterfly, completely changing its form drastically.

In regards to this quote, I have give it some thought over and over again and my friend... MAI BOI have I come out with something.

1000 points penalty.

In my mind, it works like this.

Currently, with my MK 3 Turret and Hull, I queue for battle, enters the battle.

MK3 equipment should roughly have about 4000 GS, and I will switch to my MK 8 Turret and Hull with 9999 GS.

For each and every 1000 GS increased, I will suffer some penalty:

- minus 1 kill from the score board.

- plus 1 death from the score board.

- have 10% decrease of score in the score board.

- have 10% decrease of crystal in the final score board.

In the case above, 9999 minus 4000 is 5999, meaning I will suffer minus 5 kills, add 5 death, 50% score and crystal decrease.

Yes, it does not prevent player from smurf action, but the action it selves has less meaning. 

If you want to argue, I have give you 1000 GS at your disposal, player should always go for the best they got.

The reason being, if you have a better equipment, why not go for the better equipment? If you want to play the smurfing game, then you will suffer the penalty.

This does not impact the newcomer very much as they have not experience enough to know what is GS, and does not even have the power to do so.

Regards to mission, let say I have a mission "score 6/25 kills in any battle" and if the battle would end in me having minus 5 kills, the mission will still have 6/25 kills as if the minus 5 kill doesn't happened. Same goes for if player leaves half match.

Tell me if I am crazy.

 

Testing mode.

Add a testing mode to Tanki Online. The testing mode should be along side with other game mode in the interface.

The testing mode is where developer add the content of upcoming updates to the game. Kinda like stuff everything to this game mode and put it to a test.

The testing mode does not gives any experience nor crystal.

Player have access and can queue for testing mode upon reaching Brigadier rank or higher.

The testing mode can ease the tension, stress and worry about releasing a new hull, turret, map or any other new content, if observe carefully.

Anything added to the testing mode does not apply to the current Tanki Online, meaning not everything in this mode will be added to Tanki Online. But I can hope it will  be added.

If plan to release a new map, the testing mode should all host that new map only.

If plan to release a new turret, a special box will drop from the sky and who ever gets the box can experience the new turret.

If plan to release a new hull, player will spawn with that new hull forcibly, vice versa.

Setting the rank requirement higher because at higher ranks, player would have experience enough to give a mature thought and action regard to new content.

This is all happed in testing mode.

I have a feeling this has been talked about.

Um... MM has been around for less than 5 years.   And pretty sure many of us don't "love" it.

 

Not sure how you came up with your formula.  Just seems... odd.

And unless you show players what map they will get in advance, penalizing them for switching equipment will never work.

 

But why are you so stuck on trying to match by GS?  If that were the case, the game would end in 3 months, 6 tops.  And can you guess why?  THERE'S NO INCENTIVE TO UPGRADE.  If upgrading your GS means you end up playing tougher opponents, why would buyers max out their equipment?  They'd have no advantage.  No advantage = No incentive to spend $.  No spending $ = NO GAME.

See, improving the current system; Yes. We need to do that but a system of GS based battles ain't really good. 

If I get punished for changing equipment, everything becomes a probability. You might have opponents, all having gauss 50% protection against Gauss, while you just cannot change your Gauss, to avoid losing what little you have. 

I play half the game, would like to test a new combo but I just can't cuz if I do, I'll lose crystals. Now this just doesn't work. Will only result in mass exodus.
