eSports will change drastically in 2022, one of the main and most important changes is the removal of the current eSports formats (i.eXP/BP, Light, Setups etc..). A new format will be featured next year which will be based on the regular MM settings.

Wow really? Hmm, I don't think they should do that - the current settings are much more balanced than regular MM. I think if they want to have more similarity to MM, they should have a "no rules" format, but have those matches alongside xp/bp, light and setups. But not entirely, that sounds boring and bad for eSports. MM is far too imbalanced to make for interesting gameplay in a tournament setting, as the current restricted formats allow.

That's true. Unfortunately, the number of active eSports players is drastically low (mainly due to the removal of the Flash version & lost of interest in Tanki Online). The eSports administration tried making changes to the eSports system while keeping the current format but the number of players kept decreasing. There were 2 options left, either close eSports for good, or change eSports entierly and make it available for everyone (and by everyone, I mean everyone);

Allow me to eloborate; the new "Sport" mode will be available to everyone from the rank of Warrant Officer 1 (the minimum rank that's required to play in PRO Battles). As soon as you join a "Sport" battle, your equipment will turn into MK8 automatically. That change alone will make eSports more accessable to everyone in the game as the only things players will have to purchase are turrets, hulls and supplies.

The main issue about those formats is that they were never taken into account when the developers released updates. In many occasions, balance updates changed those formats from end to end, many times it even happened during tournaments. Weeks of trainings were gone to waste and clans had to adapt to drastic changes within a period of just a few days.

Trust me, I am really sad about formats like Light being removed. However I realized it's for the better.

If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

I see, thanks for the further info. If the developers want eSports to work, this is not the way to go - they simply then need to make an effort to actually balance these eSports modes if as you say "the main issue about these formats is that they were never taken into account when the developers released updates". We could even have slightly different mechanics for eSports matches, if they really want to do their best in that regard.

I'm not sure if the "Sports" mode is going to be the new format for eSports entirely, or if they will also allow complete "no rules" matches - i.e. the same as regular MM. For the Sports mode, I think at the very least they need to enable protection modules (however no Armadillo allowed, so that there will be no unfair advantages), and those can become automatic Mk7, as the game is balanced around protection modules, and no modules at all will be disadvantageous to melee turrets in particular, who will take huge damage before they can even engage a ranged target. People will die too fast with no protection modules.

If we are going to have some "no rules" matches, then that will be very uninteresting indeed - will just be a mixture of Ultra Container augments and hovering hulls on all sides.

The previous formats were the best options to provide balanced gameplay, however if they wanted to mix it up a bit they could add some new formats, for instance I think an eSports version of TJR would be fun (with some slight changes, such as a better less random way of choosing the Juggernaut). But any new formats should only maybe be one or two rounds on top of existing formats - phasing out the existing formats which are tried and tested, and much more balance than MM (where skilled players have more chance to shine), is a big mistake.

Removing the current formats will probably do the opposite of what the developers are hoping for, this could make existing players leave as what is proposed doesn't sound good. As for opening eSports up to all ranks - there is really no point - because anyone who is actually interested in eSports will already play enough to have reached Legend (now that that is so easy), and low ranked players won't have the experience to win against higher ranked players anyway.

If the developers want to bring life to eSports, the game simply needs MORE PLAYERS. More players = more eSports players. And sure, they could add a few new types of battle mode, but only on top of the existing styles such as xp/bp, light etc. - not to entirely replace them. Balance the game properly, fix bugs such as infinite loading, and ADVERTISE the game. If we have more players, then eSports has a chance again. If we don't, it won't be just eSports that will die - the whole game will.

I think the problem with esport is that there are the same teams over and over again, why? Because, it is hard to form a clan with atleast 10 very experienced players (legend 150) and train with them everyday so that's why we see the same team over and over. Players lost interest because is it fun to watch everytime the same thing, no ofcourse. Also, the promocode rewards are very VERY lame, they give 3k crystals, if i play a 15 minutes match on my big account, i would make 15k crystals in 15 minutes, what is the point of these promo code if they are not rewarding well? My solution is to create a MM league, and test players' skills, then create balanced clan with the statistics of those players. In each team there will be noobs and pros, it would be totally random to win but we will have a different winner team each time and esport would be more appealing. I will make a comparison, in champion league, all pros are in different teams (ik thats because of the budget one team cant affort all of them), so the ending champion league winner is based on 3 factors, the team with the best budget, skills and luck, tanki esport should have those 2 last ones.

You should think about it from the developers' prespective, why should they invest money and resources into eSports if the modes featured in eSports have nothing in common with Matchmaking? Up until now, 90% of the players who participated in eSports activities are old players who take a part in eSports for years upon years. Old players leave the eSports scene but new players do not join eSports. But why is that? The answer is simple, eSports and MM are so different right now so there is almost zero chances for newbies to get the hang of it. Instead of depressetly hoping that future updates will be benefical for eSports, eSports will be taken into account mainly because it will be similar to MM. On top of that, new players will try eSports as it will be similar to the game they know.

The Sports mode is going to be the new format for eSports, the one and only format in fact. Changes can always be made to the mode upon feedback from players.

Yet again, the main issue with the old formats are:

  • Not taken into account when the developers release new updates.
  • Hard for new players to understand
  • Have nothing to do with the current state of Tanki Online.

I love the old formats much more than I like the new one, but eSports will not survive with them.

This is exactly what this approach is trying to achieve. Even so, note that the main goal of those changes is to bring more players from the current player base into eSports. Bringing new players into the game is a different story.

This all comes down to the low number of players in general and in eSports. By the way, from next season onward, clans will consist of 7 members and not 10.

I am wondering, how developers invest money into esport since helper, broadcasters etc are not rewarded with money and the winning clan are rewarded with unreal resources?

While it is not guaranteed, there is a good chance that the prize pool will include real money.

The last esports season of 2021 was quite educational for me. I used to just run out of cover and shoot everyone I see before I was killed. Now I hide behind cover more and prefer railgun. I play a bit more slow paced, finding a good opportunity for a shot. Thanks to every one who participated in the season for this!
