The Beginning - Introduction

A ‘Welcome to Chernobyl!’ sign stood on the roadside. Sem, a young teen of thirteen with brilliant blonde hair and dark eyes that stared out behind a pair of glasses, thought it would have looked welcoming had it not been so tattered. The letters were so faded, he had trouble making them out. Sem had traveled to Chernobyl from Volgograd, where his former orphanage was located. He had left the orphanage almost a year ago to search for an apprenticeship that might interest him. Carrying only a backpack with a few essential items and a water bottle, he had hiked all the way, relying on kindness of strangers for food and shelter. He had encountered many professions, which he had taken up apprenticeship for a few days before leaving  them. 
      The sun is setting, Sem noted. He would have to find shelter soon. Slightly jogging along the street past small buildings whose occupants had retired for the day. He passed numerous closed doors before spotting a small shop with a sign reading ‘Tank Parts Retailer’ in the distance. A small stretch of deserted land separated the shop from the rest of the city. 
        Walking up to it, he noted that another stretch of land separated a nuclear power plant, barely visible from the distance, from the town. As he cautiously approached the shop, saw a beefy man sitting at the counter. He had a bald head, and he wore spectacles much like Sem’s. “Um, hello,” Sem began uncertainly. His shyness often made communication a difficulty. “How may I help you?”, the man grunted kindly. “You see I travel and need some shelter,” Sem said in a rush. 

"Whoa, slow down, son!” the man chuckled. ”What do you want?”
Fumbling with his words, Sem managed to tell the man about his traveling and search for shelter without including too much stuttering. 

“Where are you traveling to?” the man inquired curiously.

“Nowhere in particular, sir,” Sem explained. “I am hoping to find a suitable apprenticeship to take up. I hope to learn some useful trade for my future.”

The bald man’s eyes crinkled as he smiled. “Sure, lad! Stay here as long as you need. But what would you do in return for shelter?”

“I’ll help around the shop,” Sem answered. “I’ll run errands for you. And if you allow, I may take up an apprenticeship with you.”

The man smiled, replying, ”It is usually pretty quiet around here, but an errand boy would be nice. Alright, you may stay.” Then, leaning back, he called into the back room, “Des, prepare a room!"

There it is, my first story posted in the WC I hope to get better as I continue. Your comments are appreciated, and if you can find any mistakes please tell me

I'm sorry, those days are long gone... I would've loved to approve this story had the AWS and the Newspaper still been here, but alas — life does seem to have other (rather bitter) plans.

Anyway, welcome to the Writers' Corner! This particular corner can accommodate any number of writers — but don't push the seniors and you'll be fine... you don't want to lose more than two teeth now, do you?

Yay, finally! Can't wait for the next part(s), not gonna lie. Also, my proofreading "skills" were gathering rust anyway, so thank you for de-rustifying me and my skills!
