Why were the turret protection modules given these names?

So a curious thought ran through me which made me wonder what about the turret that associated it with the animal in which its protection module was named after.

If you don't know the names of the modules and what turret it provides protection against, I'll list it below so you don't have to look it up:

Fox - Firebird

Badger - Freeze

Ocelot - Isida

Weasel - Tesla

Wolf - Hammer

Panther - Twins

Lion - Ricochet

Dolphin - Smoky

Orka - Striker

Shark - Vulcan

Grizzly - Thunder

Vulture - Scorpion

Falcon - Railgun

Griffin - Magnum

Owl - Gauss

Eagle - Shaft

Anyone have any ideas as to why they were given these names? Do you agree with the names? Do you have names that would fit the turrets better?

You can notice a pattern in the naming convention:

Melee range = small mammals
Short range = medium/large predators
Medium range = aquatic animals (except grizzly)
Long range = large/predatory birds

Armadillo and spider are exceptions because they're in a unique category.

But as for why modules are named after animals instead of the protections they offer — that I do not know, and I disagree with the naming scheme. The fact that you need to learn the minimalistic turret icons or click on each module to find out what it protects against is really frustrating, especially with the latest change.

I'm pretty sure the animal names are a remnant of the old system when there were over a hundred protection modules, each offering a different combination of 2-4 protections. There would have been no way to name each module accurately, so they were divided into vague categories and given arbitrary animal names. I think this naming scheme should have been removed with the module separation update.

They should be simply be renamed to something like "Smoky Protection Module", as that would be clear and straightforward.

I honestly don't mind the modules being named after animals. What I'm trying to get at is that, what do the turrets have in common with the animal its associated with?

Critical damage protection being named armadillo, mine protection being named spider makes sense. And so does railgun protection being named falcon, and shaft protection being named eagle.

I don't get why hammer protection is named wolf, Vulcan protection is named shark, and thunder protection is named grizzly.

They explained the naming of the modules. Some animals were for module sets that contained protections against certain turret ranges. Eagle, Falcon etc protected against primarily long range turrets. Fox, Ocelot etc. protected against melee/short range turrets. Kodiak, Shark etc. protected against short-mid range turrets. They had little variations with different names for each. It simply branched off from that when they made each module separate, and new turrets just followed that naming pattern.

Tesla - Weasel, Gauss - Owl, Scorpion - Vulture.

I like the names but I can see why players would want it officially simplified to just the name of the turret it protects against.

Oh, I completely forgot about that they would be named for example fox triple A or something like that  before they allowed for customized protection combinations.

I personally like the animal names, especially since modules are explained in the new garage. It adds to Tanki's legacy uniqueness rather than conforming to the newer flat/standardized theme they go for.

Me too, plus its shorter in terms of name. Instead of having to call something smoky protection module, I could just call it dolphin module or even just dolphin. Instead of having to call something firebird protection module, I can just call it fox module or even just fox.
