TBWLP 3: Untreated, Chapter 4.5

Third Twist

That's Chapter 4.5, in other words.

“What is this?” he shrieked shrilly and tried to brush the sheet away, as if the piece of paper was going to explode at any moment.

 

I backed up until I rammed into the doorknob and tried to clear my throat to tell him, but the words escaped before I meant to.  “My resignation.” A bold tone told him that I wasn’t backing down, but on the inside, I was freaking out. Why was I doing this?

 

As he regained his composure, the red-faced boss plastered his angry and confused visage into a forced smile and asked, “Why?  You were one of our best employees. You did everything right, fast, and on time. Though communication wasn’t your thing, you could really beat all those adults at this gig.  Whenever I saw you come to do your job, you were always on time and content. You always seemed happy at work; now why do you want to leave?”

 

Sighing, I told him every reason why I would quit. “I can’t work here. This is destroying my life!” Pausing for a moment to catch my breath and regain my composure, I thought of the friends at school I could never establish a closer relationship with, and then that gave me new inspiration to continue on. “I don’t get to hang out with anyone at school and just about every employee that I see here just thinks I am going to take their job! I don’t belong here. I need to go home.”

 

He looked as if he might flood the room with tears, then swallowed and spluttered out a few words, “Alright.  But remember, you will always remain part of R.T.E. Intelligence, no matter where your life takes you. I want you to have this.” Holding a dusty, weather-beaten badge gingerly, his shaking hands passed me the artifact and I took it into my hands.  “We give these antique badges from R.T.E.’s old days to any agent who has chosen a new career. We want them to stay in touch and get to know fellow former agents. This will allow you to contact any undercover agent within a five-mile radius.” I raised my eyebrows, confused. “Er...former agents. Whatever you do, don’t stop making these codes. We might see them someday.”

 

Placing the badge in my pocket, I stared at the man who had found me an alternative to being locked up in the torture chambers of Avail Academy.  Extending out my hand, I offered it to him, and we shook hands before I left this office forever.

 

 

I never considered adding this chapter until I started to dream. In my sleep, I saw this scene. I see it as a bridge between Chapters 4 and 5, but it was too short to be a chapter, so yeah. That's what happened.

Good, maybe I would still consider prolonging the chapter a bit more. I did not have time to get to the previous chapters, but from the 4.5 in the title I am guessing this is some sort of connecting chapter which might explain why it is shorter. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, it happens to be one of the random chapters that are short (a bridge).  But there is a real chapter called bridge, so I don't want to call this one bridge as well.
