Mysteries The first mystery I'll be talking about is the following one: Are humans the only form of intelligence in the universe? This mystery isn’t solved and will most likely never be solved, knowing that the universe expands all the time. We are, so far, the only form of intelligence in the universe, which humans know. So, to be short, except themselves, humans haven’t discovered any other form of intelligence. But this might not last for long anymore, knowing that we’ve recently discovered water on Mars! Who knows… Maybe we’ll discover Martians? I like this mystery mainly because it’s a mystery that lasts pretty much ‘forever’. Million of years ago, the mystery was already there, and I doubt we’ll have found the correct explanation for it in one million years! Moreover, many mysteries have an author, while here, in addition of the main ‘mystery’, the author of it is also a mystery, for which many people have found their own ‘explanation’ (à Religions). So basically, this mystery has no limits but does have many interpretations (like for every other mystery, actually). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another mystery I found interesting is also about ‘space & co’, as it’s about a man, called Jerry Ehman, a volunteer for SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. One day, he was scanning radio waves from deep space, hoping to randomly come across a signal that bore the hallmarks of one that might be sent by intelligent aliens, when he saw his measurements spike. The signal lasted for 72 seconds, and it looked like this: He wrote “Wow!” on the original paper, hence the name of this mystery-The Wow! Signal. We couldn’t determine where the message came from, in the galaxy, which makes this story a mystery. I like this mystery because it was in relation with the previous ones. “Are we alone in here?”. This is a very futurist and ideal mystery to grab people’s attention, which sadly makes this theory less credible. The reason why people like mysteries (in my opinion) is because they know they are safe, while reading articles about mysteries. It’s kind of similar to amusement parks: When you get on a roller-coaster, you know you’re riding around 50-90 km/h, but you also know that whatever happens (except extreme cases but you usually don’t refer to them for making your opinion about the situation), you’ll be safe, as you’re in a cart and almost nothing can happen! So it's really the feeling you get of knowing you're safe while informing yourself about some dangerous mysteries. But in general (for these 2 mysteries, too) it's just curiosity. We've all always wanted to know what happens after death, or, the example I took earlier, are we alone in the universe? A pretty exciting question that always grabs people's attention!

Hi! Thank you for your point but I don't see how Creative Destruction shows that I'm wrong… Moreover, thank you for the book suggestion but I really am not interested in economics. :)

Arcachon Sexism is bad. Racism is unthinkable. Neo-Nazism is horrible. A racist person is a bad person. I mustn’t be kind with him. I must make sure all his acquaintances know he’s racist so he stays… alone. I must discriminate him. Sexism is bad. Racism is unthinkable. Neo-Nazism is horrible. Many, to not say almost everyone, implicitly act and think like this. Although it seems extreme, we are taught every day to think that way. Every day people are taught by their friends, parents, and teachers that racism, sexism, etc. is bad. So far, nothing really wrong. But we’ve come to a point where people start discriminating the primer discriminators, instead of denouncing them. That means, indeed, that one gets discriminated for being racist. What’s next? Discrimination of those who discriminate the racists? Discrimination of those who discriminate those who discriminate the racists? I could go on like this forever. We sometimes say that as a joke, but if we think about it, that’s what’s actually going on in the society. The point is people take what they are taught a step further. They do not only consider the fact that racism is bad, they consider that topic as ‘taboo’, and, as I said previously, they implicitly discriminate racists. Why implicitly? Not implicitly for us, but implicitly for them. If you ask someone whether he discriminates racists or not, he will surely answer negatively. Not because he doesn’t want to assume, but because he doesn’t feel like his behaviour can be considered as discrimination. Why? “Because everyone does it, my dear!” But they forget that this is precisely what we call discrimination: exclusion of a certain group of persons by the so-called ‘everyone’. “We all agree that racism is bad, right? So why wouldn’t I exclude something that’s bad?” Because it remains discrimination. “But hey, racism is such a bad thing! We are all humans and should respect each other the way we are, shouldn’t we!? My teacher told me!” says sometimes the one who hasn’t ever seen a black person. So what does it show? People’s minds are being manipulated by the society. I wouldn’t say it’s naivety, though. But one thing is sure: with that manipulation, the society is stuck in a cage. Another aspect about this problem I could give you is people’s susceptibility. If I criticize women or just mention some difference men/women in Europe, the probability of being treated of sexist is around 85%, depending on the criticism/ascertainment itself, country, culture, etc. It could be a biological scientifically proven fact; one will still get discriminated for mentioning it. But that, only if you talk about it with women. If you talk about it with men, the probability is around 30%. Why that low? That’s another story. The -different- story of machismo. As final note, I’d like to make sure we all understand that this text is neither about racism, nor sexism nor neo-Nazism itself, it’s about racists’, sexists’ and neo-Nazis’ discrimination instead of denunciation. Moreover, in no way I support any of these mentalities, and write this article with an as neutral as possible view. One who didn’t really get what this text is about and read this without really thinking, will only notice the words “black, white, racist, sexist, Nazi”. The author didn’t clearly say he was totally against these mentalities, or at least when mentioning that topic didn’t share his obvious opinion on all this… Or… “But the author is racist!” If so... Would you discriminate me? I bet you also noticed that one word. Discrimination. Obviously.

Crisis Incoming (Normal English)
sirogo replied to sirogo in Crisis Incoming (Normal English) Writers' Corner
Overproduction Crisis Yet since years, humans are losing their job in favor of intelligent machines because of their good efficiency. The production rate is rising quickly but the number of buyers is going down. The overproduction crisis is about to happen… First of all, let’s define the term “intelligent machines”. The first one was created during World War II to find the Enigma code, invented by Alan Turing. It was a kind of computer, but without any interface. Now it evolved and we have other kinds of computers, personal and ‘professional’ ones. Everyone can have a Mac or Windows computer, but getting a much more intelligent one like Watson (smartest intelligent machine in the world) can only be done by huge societies and companies. So while you are trying to afford a PC as cheap as possible, other powerful companies are spending the entirety of their wealth in buying the most sophisticated and intelligent machines. They are buying intelligence! It’s like buying as many ‘brains’ as possible, but with a discount! Because, yes, instead of having 100 human brains in 100 m^2, they can have the equivalent of 200 human brains in 1 m^2! So… What would you do if there was a 50% sale on you favourite Mac book pro? Now let’s take a look at their use. They can have plenty of tasks, but many companies’ computers are used to program machines or kind of ‘robots’ that will have a mechanical influence on the company’s production system, and by that, production rate. SO now you can guess what will happen next: The rise of companies’ production rate! That’s why they’re buying intelligent machines after all… So, companies buy intelligent machines in order to increase their production rate, and by these computers, people lose their job, and there are less jobs available. But if a person is unemployed, he’s obviously not earning anything. And if people don’t earn money anymore, as a matter of fact they don’t have any more money to spend on buying these companies’ product. So while industries are having the highest production rate they ever had, civilians can’t buy anything. We are about to arrive to the biggest overproduction crisis ever, and humanity is definitely not ready for it.- 7 replies
