I recommend you to make your garage stronger first, then go for MU, so save up the crystals for next modification, but if you like to play in drugging battle then i suggest you to MU your turrets/hulls :)

I think it's your keyboard, because I use to have the same problem, sometime my keyboard didn't works, I though it was tanki problem but it wasn't, I found out my keyboard don't work sometime, so now I got new keyboard everything works fine now, I never got that problem again.

I recommend you to buy Smoky m3 and savanna. First upgrade most of the hull/turrets m3 and then go for paints, so buy a gun m3 and a paint. :)

^ and try cleaning the caches and browsing history, see if that works.
