Well in the Dutch Tankiskypechat i see pictures sometimes of goldboxes in the tunnel. But i guess it falls mostly outside the tunnel or in the middle of the map.

I think it's just another action from Tanki to get more players buy crystals. Once much players microupgrade you want to keep up with them. I think they should remove the option that you can fail a upgrade. You pay the crystals , so just upgrade it instead of getting drugs back which i never buy :/
