Just use the 'garage'-button, you will stay in the battle and keep your score. After you changed your equipment, just press 'garage' again to return to the battle.

They won't hide it, this was just because everyone in testserver had to use the new system because there were no other ways to change your combo, this way they were able to check how the new system performs when many people use it.
