Dear Tankers,
One of the things I love about Tanki is it's global appeal and you can chat to people all over the world at the same time.
Recently I was talking to someone in USA , Australia , England and Khazakstan. Pretty Cool
It's got me wondering as I have never came across any fellow Scots like me - If there any of you out there.
If you are full blown Scottish like me or descended then you can post here so we'll know who all the 'Jocks' are.
There are Scots all over the world and I'm sure many descendents so even if your not and like some of our stuff or visited this small beautiful country
than feel free to add your comment.
We are known for our engineering,architecture and inventiveness.
Sadly with the decline of heavy industry many of the jobs in Shipbuilding,Steel works,mining and engineering are no longer here
so no wonder many Scots went abroad.
In Tanki we can join a Clan. There are Clans to be found all over the world and the word originates from Scots/Irish gaelic word 'Clann' meaning family.
Scottish Clans developed their own tartan as part of their identity and after the Jacobite rebellion in 1745 the wearing of tartan was banned .
Clans were always fighting with each other then we fought the English and there are many reminders of its turbulent past particularly
around the borders where both sides sacked each others towns.Many churches and Abbeys still lay in ruins.
There are battlefields all over the place.
It's one of the reasons so many of us wear traditional highland dress at ceremonies and events and as I'm a lowlander I prefer the trews to the kilt.
If you wear a kilt in Scotland tradition is ' you go commando' if you know what I mean !
Its around this time of year we celebrate the songs and poems of Robert Burns and this involves attending a ' Burns Supper'.
These are held all over the world and the ' bill of fayre ' [ menu ] is a haggis.
Burns poem - 'To a Haggis' is often recited prior to the supper and he refers to it as ' Great Chieftan o' the pudding race'
A toast to the lassies then follows with a nip of whisky and yes I have visited a few of the distilliries around Scotland.
Burns work is known the world over also - everyone has heard of 'Auld lang Syne'
Some of his lines are classic ' To see ourselves as ithers see us'
If you have visited here you will know its a wet place - but when the sun shines there's no where like it.
There are hundreds of mountains many of which I have climbed and there's no sign of any civilisation,sometimes you will not meet a single soul.
Here is a picture I took from the highest mountain in Glencoe summit of Bidean nam Bian [ a clan massacre took place not far and is a major visitor site ]
One major thing happening this year is will we become independant but I hope we stay part of the UK as we are all one big clan now,
except when we play at Football or Rugby.sadly were doing that well but getting better on the tennis front.
