    The Bartender called 2016

The bartender was calling for the final shots. As I sat there staring at the neon rings and champagne bottles, I realized that it was time to wear my hat and start a new journey. I really do not wish to leave him, but that fine bloke has got a new job offer upstate. I am never going to see him for the rest of my life, and it already sucks. As I bid adieu to him and left the bar, it all came back to me. The three hundred and sixty five days that I spent with him having the absurd and sometimes the rational conversations could not just end on the most heart wrenching word: “Bye”. So I went back to the bar hoping to find him there, but he was long gone. As I strolled back to my apartment, I took out my phone and texted a thank you letter to him. Just to break your suspense, I called this friend of mine as 2016, which was actually his employee ID number. Dear 2016, I know texting is not the ideal way to thank someone, but sometimes this new technology comes really handy. So let’s keep our bro code aside and talk about some deep stuff. I hope you are already crying, loser. Just kidding, I love you, but this is just the beginning. Thank you, for those four valuable lessons you taught me after compromising your sleep and staying for hours on the other side of the table. Yes. You heard that right. Four valuable perspectives coming out of a man who flunked high school twice. Long story short, take a look at it yourself. · Be yourself. All our lives, we make a pros and cons list for all our actions. Taking in a lot of factors like the “What will people think?” factor, “What will my friends and family say?” factor, and some other ones as well. If you want to dance like Bean knowing that you will look like an absolute dunce, then pull up your dancing boots and shake it off. If you want to lick the liberty bell like Barney, the womanizer guy with a not so womanizer guy called Ted, then go ahead and lick it. Be the Barney, not the Ted. Life is too short for making a pros and cons list for everything you do my friend. So just be yourself. That’s it. Do not care what other people will think. If you do not like the aura of some people in your life, then push them away and move on. The bar (called as Life) will welcome a lot of new people anyway. Trust me, the power of individuality makes a man, man. Do not blend into other personalities. Do not lose your morals and principles. · Failure is sweeter than success. Imagine going to a five star hotel and having a perfect sugar cube. Do you praise the cube or the thousands of sugar particles that are cohesively stuck to each other? Yes, it is always the cube we talk about. Neglecting the essence of what makes a sugar cube, a sugar cube. Just like that, failures and its after effects makes a man. It gives him his true essence. It shows him the reflection of his character. My point being, do not get upset and feel disappointed or dejected in life due to a failure. It is just one of those hundreds or thousands of sugar particles that is going to give the taste to your big cube, called success. Till then, be patient. Always believe in yourself. And if you do not then all those sugar particles will fall apart and you will never be able to put them back again. So just wait for things to fall in place, and your big sugar cube will be served on your plate. · The Power of spreading happiness. We often get so busy and stuck up with our lives, that we forget to spread the power of happiness around us. Do you know that a simple and mundane “thank you” can make a security guard feel good about his job. Just a “How are you doing?” can make him feel as if he is contributing to something. Yes, people might call you weird, creepy, and all sorts of derogatory names, but does it really matter? Why the hell do you care about anyone when you already made someone’s day? Why care about those raised eyebrows when you already brought a smile to someone’s face? You see my point. I am not saying that go around and start having small talk with the samosa waala, or maybe you can, but it is your choice. Bring the change. Bring the smile. Next time you see a person who is not so happy in his/her life, go up to him/her and try to help them out. Make a point that you bring a smile to someone’s face everyday henceforth. · Being a good human is a need, being a rational human is a necessity. It is pretty obvious that being a good human is one of the most fundamental qualities every individual should possess. Everyone should be a good father, mother, son, student, friend, boyfriend, girlfriend (P.S.- I still do not have any despite your promise of finding me one), and many other things. Amidst all of this, we often lose the touch of being rational. Rationality is like the secret weapon no one likes to talk about. I am not going to stress on this point much because I want this to be your today’s food for thought. I know you are scratching your head right now thinking when you taught me all of this, but it just happened. And I thank you for that. You know I have always been fond of acquiring new perspectives in life. It sucks you are moving, but I guess this is it. Have a safe journey man. Make good use of those moves you got in your pocket. I will wait for a reply. Till then, Thank You! Yours lovingly, Cola on the rocks =================================================================================================== I turned off the lamp and crashed for some slumber. When I went back to Life (the same bar), there were some unusual scenes. Double the usual number of people and occupied seats on the bar. Soon I realized that people were celebrating the first day of Mike, the new bartender after Jake. I walked up to the bar and tried to let the fact sink in that Jake was gone. “What would you like to have sir?”, asked the new bloke with a goofy smile on his face. “Co-la-ummmm”, I stammered as I looked at Mike’s badge. It said 2017. “Just beer for me man”, I smiled. “Right up, Sir.” And Life had a new bartender, called 2017.

    The Golden Toy

16th October 2014 I was away from my monotonous college life attending a local conference last weekend. The theme of this con was a question- "Who Am I?". A very simple question put forward in three small words. Recently, one of my middle school friends buzzed me stating the importance of constant introspection in our lives. Intriguing. Definitely kept me thinking for a couple of days. So seriously, who the hell are we? What the hell are we doing on this planet? Here is my perspective. Before I commence with the depth of this topic, I would love to tell you guys about a theory I came up with, a couple of days back. Well, it's a story actually, but I love to call it a theory. Whatever you are going to read for the next two minutes, think about it! Just keep imagining. Here we go. There was a boy, 9, who lived with his parents in Egypt. He had a golden toy, the most prized possession of his. He loved it so much that he played around with it everyday. He had other toys too, but this one just gave him some sort of happiness that the other toys did not. The boy was so happy. Seeing him so elated with the toy, everyone started getting jealous of him. All the other kids in the village wanted to steal his toy and play with it. The boy sensed this and went back to his father. Like all the other kids, he was insecure about his golden toy. He did not want to sacrifice on the thing he loved the most. " Papa, what do I do?", asked the boy with tears in his blue eyes. "Go hide it. Hide it so that no one will ever find it.", said the father. The boy was naive. He asked his father, "What is the safest place on this planet?" Since they lived in Egypt, his father told him to hide it in the Sahara desert. The boy obeyed his father and hid the golden toy in the desert. For the next ten years of his life, the boy played with a lot of toys. He liked some toys even more than his golden toy, but eventually got bored of them. He turned nineteen. He did not feel happy in doing anything. Nothing was able to give him the same prolonged happiness. He was annoyed by the mess he fell into. The boy went to his father again. " Papa, what do I do?", he asked with the husky voice. His father looked into his eyes, and asked him to go find and get his golden toy back. The boy went to the desert. It is a desert. Deserts change every month. How on Earth can he find his toy? The boy lost his golden toy. He had no idea about its location. He knows that nothing will give him the same happiness. So, he starts searching his toy. He uses different methods to find his toy. He uses a spade, a shovel and what not. Ten years just pass by and the boy could not find his golden toy. He failed thousands of times. Nothing helped. One day, out of exhaustion, he sits down to take some rest. The boy is twenty-nine now. Not a boy now, eh? He feels something. He hears a call from his heart. The boy digs the sand under him. Unexpectedly, he finds his golden toy. After ten years, he goes back to his dad and hugs him. "Go play with it, son.", the father kissed and told his son. The boy was happy again. He started playing with his golden toy again. Only this time, he used it to help others. He let others play with it as well. Another decade went by and now the boy was the most successful person on the planet. He was happy. You see, every human being on this planet has his/her golden toy. It is his/her gift. We are given this toy when we step into this world. We play around with it. Why do people say that childhood is the best phase of your life? It is simple. We are free. No inhibitions. No fear to make mistakes. It is the happiest phase as we play with our toy. Just like the boy, one day we become worried of our golden toy because "people" want to steal it away. Someone in this world tells you to hide your golden toy because "people" will snatch it away. Like fools, we hide it. As we grow up, we start doing a lot of things. Things that look attractive to us. Things that give us a hell lot of happiness, but eventually we grow weary of it. We like a lot of things. We do a lot of things. We do not love any of them. Well, not like how we loved our golden toy. We just fall into the trap of adulthood. Then something happens and we realize that we need to find our golden toy. So we begin the search. We use a lot of methods to find it. We fail ten thousand times. One day, a method does our work. Something from our heart tells us that we have arrived at our destination. One day, we find our golden toy. We do not find it using spades or shovels. Rather, we find it by feeling the safest place for anyone, our hearts. And when we find it, trust me, the happiness comes back. According to my perspective, success in life is not earning money and having a nine digits sum in your bank account. It is not wearing a Zara suit everyday. Success is finding your golden toy and using it to serve others. I can go on and on about this, and how everything in life relates to this story. But what is the fun if you do not give it any sort of thought? So take some time out and think about this theory. As a writer, I hope my readers can slightly relate to the story. I just feel that most of us are still finding our golden toys. Remember, no one can help you. You hid it in your heart. Stop looking around for it. Ask your heart. Ask yourself. You are the best. What is that one thing that you can do for the rest of your life? One thing that you can never ever get bored of. One thing that will give you the same amount of happiness that you get when you do it right now. Think about it. Nothing can beat the happiness you get when you do 'it'. The answer to this question is your golden toy. Love you!
