You cannot see your friends in a battle because they are playing in a private battle , When someone invite you , you have something like 15-20 seconds before the notification goes away , just press on the botton "Go to battle" when you see the notification without waiting a lot.

What do you mean? can you give us more details about your problem?

Maybe the other guy wrapped to you so you both had chance to get it... maybe he had luck or he used taller Hull than yours.
