Where'd that top image come from? I had nothing when I played...

That was the first time I went into scope. Something similar (that I promised but never showed you guys) on the real server.

It was a sign that I was going to get an error soon.

Ok, I decided to really take in Light Capacitors with Hornet now, and I'm loving it. That with Hornet is literally Shaft on fast forward.

Because of the speed at which my Hornet moves, going into sniping mode while driving requires me to hit the target while my Hornet is recoiling from the sudden stop. I'm accurate enough as most of my shots that way hit so I have little problem there. Molotov seemed to produce the best results.

This one was hands down the most fun I had.

Felt like a real quicksniper there. I even did well in a Highways battle. I swore I saved it, but I got the most kills on my team while staying in my base, weakening and picking off enemies.

I love it.

Lol seeing Tide play (this just reminded me of it) reminds me that I still have a long way to go, even though I still get good scores. Time for more practice (I've been spending so much time with Vulcan, until the HLWN map I hadn't played Shaft in a while).

Agreed. I am living for the heavy capacitor alt now.

Do you see why me and @Initiate stood by this alt for such a long time?

What you saw didn't just come outta nowhere. 300+ hours of playing Shaft will work wonders. To take the step and cripple yourself by taking away 25% of your damage is the real challenge, however. Once you do that and practice for many hours, you'll know what to do in each situation within milliseconds.

My origins with LCs weren't exactly the brightest, either.

It took me a while to be able to reach the score limit of 30 in DMs. But as time progressed....

I learned how to humiliate even Legends...

I learned how to improve my K/D even on the toughest maps for Shaft...

Until I could consistently achieve results like this. It took me weeks of grinding during a trip in Spain in which I was supposed to be studying...

Until I could learn to never miss a shot up close or at range.

And until I became recognized as one of the top snipers in the EN community.

I guess it's true what they say that practice makes perfect. I still have places to go, but I'm getting there. All it takes for an ascension like this is just a little push.

P.S. Not convinced yet? Look at the kill log in the image below.

In case you were wondering, this was without RFM!

And this right here is what I was somewhat afraid of. I'm getting these scores using Hornet. Hornet's Overdrive in itself is very powerful considering double armour and protection modules' impact on battle outcome, more so the latter.

I tried it with Hunter and didn't get results as good as I did with Hornet. And that was totally expected, since an alteration like this requires you to be up front with the enemy and retreating if you failed to kill them, as well as changing temporary vantage points after each shot.

Hornet's Overdrive + double damage is what is getting me all these great results. It has the disadvantage that you can't reliably one-shot medium hulls on equal footing so using the Overdrive without double damage on LC is worse than with Stock or Assault Emitters.

These are some of the greater scores I've gotten.

Haven't played DM in so long as it hasn't loaded for me every time I queue for it. I'll try it out there.

Welcome to our ragtag group of snipers!

HCs could hardly be allowed in the club. It's more of a Mobile Sniper group.

Also... there's a reason they have something called spoilers :D

I used to be on the front lines with Hornet + HC a while back. It had its advantages and disadvantages, mostly disadvantages. Stock was generally better in those scenarios.

Glad to see more and more tankers learning to appreciate the power of this rather underrated turret.

On the other hand, I am not so glad since more and more people are using Eagle module as a result >_>

Dear God that looks very busy and duplo.  I think I'm going to miss the Flash interface when I finally move over to HTML5.

Alright, so lately I've been playing around with shaft and I really love it. Ive noticed basically two types of shaft players...campers and attackers. Lots of titans sitting in the back of the base or light/medium hulls attacking and playing midfield. First, can you shaft guys share your thoughts on this?

Also, is the 3 shot alt a good buy? I like playing aggressively, so that seems good, but is there any downside?

1st bullet point: Me as a Hornet, I utilize both camping and attacking.

But it is possible for Light/Heavy hulls perform differently in vice versa.

  • Meaning, a Titan Shaft can be used for attacking if equiping good close-range modules or/and equipping unaltered Shaft, Triple Shot, SBE, possibly LC (but this is awkward LOL ).
  • Or even a Medium-hull Shaft camping in the bushes using HC, capable of one-shotting any enemy tanks that has 4k HP or below (except if he/she has Lifeguard Drone ready) if OD is activated. Camping using LC works, though you may need to utilizing peek-a-boo.

In CTF/CP/RGB/TDM/TJR/ASL, this may depend playing defence or making a daring move. For defence, if I can sweet spot to camp, HC fits that bill. Attacking however, all alternation except Heavy Capacitor will be suitable.

In DM, not using HC at all, no safe spot to camp. Scramblin' 'round the map, popping a SB if needing to outrun an opponent.

Not surprisingly, based on your rating page, you are a Hornet-Shaft at this moment.

2nd bullet point: The 3x shot is a good choice if you only use arcade shots, but there are 3 prices you have to pay: 30% less damage in sniper shot, longer energy recovery and.... only firing 3 shots in a burst.

I haven't played with it aside from the Test Server, but to add on to what @FrozenRailgun said:

1. According to people who use it, it can easily be OP but gets boring very quickly

2. Doesn't need any skill really

3. Isn't really Shaft - you're not sniping

4. (this is from me playing with it in Test Server, vastly different than main servers ofc) It's almost like a melee turret - you have to get up close to fight people because of the quick decrease in damage for arcade shots

5. Again, not really a Shaft. I stress this point, because you may as well just use Duplet instead of RFM (Rapid-fire)

For instance, if you want to get into this club (http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=383047), you have to use LCs. Just sayin'. LCs is waaay more fun to use (by popular agreement). Just go for Light Capacitors, you'll do well with a bit of skill. RFM is boring (and nub).

Big thanks to both who answered...these are very helpful answers. I'm getting better with this turret, but defeintely is more fun with faster hulls than heavies...would really like to make wasp work but idk if thats a thing.

So, the RFM: It doesnt say the sniping damage is 30% less...is this a hidden negative?

Also, broadband deals more damage....is that the only thing? More damage with slower reload? How does that work vs regular.

This, is sniping damage being decreased by 30%.

Edit-RFM.png

No, it doesn't say it in its description, because Tanki made no changes to the official descriptions after many balance changes, only until recently, but only the descriptions of Missile Launcher "Uranium" and Mammoth's Overdrive.

The effect of the damage increase is most felt in the M1-2 ranks if your Shaft is upgraded compared to everyone else. You'd be able to one-shot (mostly near one-shot) light hulls with it, and guaranteed two-shot medium hulls.

Stock Shaft vs SBE Shaft vs hulls on equal footing and modification level

Against Light Hulls: Stock Shaft kills them faster

Against Medium Hulls: SBE Shaft kills them faster

Against Heavy Hulls: Stock Shaft kills them faster.

Stock Shaft handles short and long-duration fights better than SBE. SBE fares better against unprotected medium hulls.

So, the more I play with this thing, the more I love it...I always thought it was a camping turret bc I typically see shaft mammoths posting up and multing in the back of the map...and it can. It does play quite good defense...however, with faster hulls it is sooo cool. I get to use hornet and wasp and actually get decent k/ds.

The Rapid Fire Mode seems bad when you look at the specific stats, but I've seen people using it to great effect

Oh and quick-scoping to get last second kills....amazing

Rapid-fire mode is one of the cheapest ways to get kills quick. The problem lies in the fact, though, that only people who have no interest in using Shaft like it should be utilize. Take MrThunder as an example. Since it suffered a damage reduction of 30% in sniping mode, the only reason why you would use it is to spam arcades, so really the only people who will be using RFM are tryhard Viking or Hornet-Shafts in DMs, which is a contributing reason to why DMs are near unplayable. I suggest to use it only if you are desperate to get kills, like at the end of challenges.

Believe it or not, it actually takes skill to camp. I perfected this in the days of solo JGR when it was still DM and half the people wanted to kill you. Making yourself invisible to both the JGR and the rest of the players taught you how to be more aware of your surroundings will help you out in attack and in camping, believe it or not. Once I had that, I was able to transition to LCs and go on the offensive, with the occasional stealth coming into play.

Technically, you don't have to use LCs... it's just strongly recommended. It just has a learning curve that, once mastered, will make your skill skyrocket, and will also make you feel like a sniper in the best eSports clans.

This, is sniping damage being decreased by 30%.

Hornet-Shaft is probably the most rewarding combination in today's Tanki. You'll learn how to be more precise with your shots as well as memorizing the HP values of pretty much every hull at every M level (yes, you WILL learn that if you want to become successful).

Besides, RFM was never bad on paper. I always knew that it was brokenly OP, especially back when it had full sniping damage.

Nothing will give you more pleasure than to 360 quickscope some dude across the map for the game winning kill. 200+ hours of Shaft will allow you to do that, believe it or not.

1. So your argument about RFM is that I should only get it if I plan to use arcade mode instead of sniping mode? How does that last sentence about it being broken, tie in?

2. How does LC's help...seems to be popular, so what do people like about it?

3. YES! I have found that this combo is probably the most fun I've had...I've tried shaft in the past and because I just multed in the back of the base with a heavy hull, I found it boring...using light hulls and moving a lot is sooo fun

Besides, RFM was never bad on paper. I always knew that it was brokenly OP, especially back when it had full sniping damage.
