My first stab at the Yesterville Saga

Every Thursday, rain or shine, every aspiring writer within a five-mile radius of Motivate Me Writing Centers devoted two hours in the night to dreaming up anything from violent flash fictions to expertly crafted novels. As with each large group, these teens gathered in their own little groups to craft their Halloween mystery collaborations.

Among a small gathering of mainly first-year Young Writers, one girl noticed the table shaking, the ground threatening to break open and swallow the classroom. Just as she was about to speak, the bespectacled chubby kid across from her released a swift kick, hitting her, and she silenced.

“If you can all pay attention,” the annoyed teen grumbled. Once he had assumed leadership, the energy emanating from his voice had also seemed to tame the rest of those around him.  The girl, the only one who had offered ideas, had given up. Whenever she tried to say anything, she would only be forced into a wall of silence.  They just hated her.

Maybe it was how she was supposed to be a rich kid, the daughter of Paul Myers, a budding entrepreneur who had founded ViroTech, a company which worked on surgical nanobots, but she’d only turned out second-rate to her twin brother. Just maybe. But even though she was inferior, most of the town thought of her as a outcast, both talentless and despised for being rich, secluding her to the apparent safety of her own home. As she wondered why the world disliked her so much, the teacher called, “Class dismissed!”

Walking down the three streets back to her comfortable home across town, she walked along the trick-or-treaters begging for candy. As she passed each one, every single person screamed and shuffled away as fast as their costumed legs could carry them.

Arriving by the driveway, she began to pull out her house keys and saunter up those last steps to her porch. Just as she felt the jingle of a dolphin keychain in her pocket, two masked teens grasped onto her tightly. Bullies. She was no stranger to them, but unknowing of the damage they were to cause.

Running through the garden, they had one goal in mind: stopping her father from gaining any more fortune. Ever since he had made his first nanobots, their family had been envied by the town because of their riches. Smashing through a wooden fence and setting off alarms, the pair of daredevils made a beeline towards the shed. Her father’s home workshop. Preparing as they would for the javelin, they took a stance and hurled her towards the building housing all the prototypes of a soon-to-be revolutionary invention.

She didn’t feel the impact, the body-slam onto metal-reinforced wood.  Only one pinching pain in her left arm left her queasy.

With all the ruckus, her father rushed outside. Paul’s stress-worn face turned to shock and anger once he saw his daughter trying to crawl out of the opening of the shed, a nanobot pinned to her arm.

“What in the-?” he shrieked. “YOU!” he yelled, unsure whether directed to the attackers or her.  Running to his child, he shouted at her. “Whatever you do, don’t sneeze! This could be the end of my new nanobots!” As she held her breath, a wave of silence enveloped the two of them. Time froze, then sped up to a crawl. Slowly, everything returned to normal.

The wind howled in the darkness, and the earth shook once more.

This is my attempt to introduce a scapegoat and the start of the apocalypse to the story. Let's get this thing rolling!

Until next time...

An addendum: if you can post your What If questions here, I'd really appreciate it. I need those for a new series fueled by fellow writers! Thanks!

Hmm, let's see where this will go. Is this a part of the project you guys work on together? If yes, I would suggest linking the previou part/s. It is always good to have links to previous chapters.

Sorry about formatting. Blame Google Docs.

Nice!

Very much thanks.  Say, do you want to join in on this anthology?
