The battle fund isn't what you earned in battle. The battle fund is divided between all participants in the end of the game. So if you stay till the end, you will get a portion of it (depending on your place n the battle). Leaving before the battle is over will result in not getting anything. The 20 or so crystal change in your inventory is most likely from picking up crystal boxes.

if you upgrade one parameter you will get a discount on the next modification upgrade. For instance if you upgrade all 25 steps of speed on a hull, you will get a small discount. Fully upgrading a second parameter will increase the discount.
