We Have a Crisis, and It's Not a Drone

?Do we *need* to intentionally make bad arguments here? I’m not a content creator, my good fellow! Anyways, I know Viking, he’ll try to make me look ridiculous on everything I write. The sad part? He is often the one that ends up looking that way, and usually doesn’t realize it ? As the period in his first post indicates, though, this time he noticed, apparently.

Aside from the fact that I’m not a content creator, Viking (good try, good try, but... try to use that self described frog brain next time!), I don’t think either of you got my point. You don’t understand why I posted this, and you never will, unfortunately. Your comments were good (well, mostly) if it had been a normal discussion topic. However, as I mentioned in my second post, the spiel was beyond the scope of your understanding. And so, rather than making fools of yourselves arguing with something that is not to be argued with, perhaps you’d like to hop along (what do frogs do again? Hop? Jump?) and take your time replying to posts that are truly made for the purpose of gathering your input. Edit: hiyah, @Viking4s, you know you can just hide your post instead of editing it to a period, right? Did your froggy brain forget it, like your “froggy eyes” have failed to see other things? Forgive me, that was slightly rude... even if you are a self-described frog.

We Have a Crisis, and It's Not a Drone

Ahem. Disasters happen, sometimes. Unfortunately, we may be in the midst of a crisis at this very moment. While this article discusses the many people creating YouTube content about Tanki Online, I do not regard it as a review of what they produce. Rumours say that it is getting less entertaining, but I leave that to others to decide. Today, we address the rising issue of the negligence of Tanki Online to make it exceedingly clear to YouTubers: any sort of contravention of the game rules is absolutely not to be tolerated. The trend of content creators getting away with doing stunts that should be less-than-agreeable in the eyes of the game developers has gotten off the rails. To avoid getting a bunch of rotten tomatoes thrown in my face, I won’t name individuals here. But I’ll say it anyways, because we want this game to be fair and fun for everyone. Any rule breaking, of any kind, should be prosecuted, for the health of the game. The trend started, at first, several years ago. The biggest YouTubers for the game did one, possibly two things in battle that are against the rules. It becomes a slippery slope, because dealing out bans for the slightest infraction (particularly against those bringing thousands of hours of watchtime to the game every month) seems unnecessarily strict. However, it was noticed that the rules are not enforced every strenuously, to say the least, and the trend began leaking down to smaller content creators. Now it is not uncommon to see all sorts of multing, interfering, and other unsavoury activities taking place in the videos made in promotion of the game. The trend has ended where it logically would, and it would appear to the viewers that punishments have been done away with for these rule-breakers, because they are filmed with such constancy and yet the accounts and channels of these people have remained intact. But not only do we have people breaking the rules of gameplay - no, no, far from it! The small content creators, building on this developer leniency, have begun to recklessly insult and disparage the game, developers, and helpers. But allow me to clarify; I am not in favour of a totalitarian system of running the game, where the least infraction is punished by severe bans. However, I would support the easing in of rules. Not in the style of the immortal Lucas Beaumanoir would I give sanction to such enforcement, but rather to a calm, rational approach. Violators are warned. And warned again. And again. Disciplinary actions may include the removal of certain rights and actions. Those who continue to disregard game rules should, eventually, be subjected to a sort of punishment in-game that may be repealed if the offender promises to heed the rules in the future. The ones who continue, in spite of continued warnings, to needlessly disparage the game developers and helpers openly on the platforms provided to them should be removed from any rewards they have garnered from the YouTuber TO program, and have their in-game permissions rescinded. Only then, perhaps, can we move on to a helpful environment in which everyone who has been gifted a platform in the game can give helpful and constructive feedback to the developers without flaming; before we can move past the temper tantrums of the small content creators and focus on helping, improving, and promoting the game. Yes, indeed, I say it without overtness: the game rules and basic civility should alike be more heavily regarded when the matter of content creators is considered. The ones who break both codes, written and unwritten, must be repeatedly warned and then subject to more startling punishments if they continue to disregard the game and its helpers. And now - enter, gallant rotten tomatoes!

    Go Easy, Tanki

Greetings, fellow tankers! As a former player of Tanki, one-time forumer, and experienced developer-flamer (in my early days on the forum), I cannot number the times I have seen (and written myself) that criticizing the game does nothing unless suggestions are made for the improvement of the development process. And so, I’m here. I don’t have all the answers, of course. Tanki is an old game that has been enjoyed by many, many players, but naturally people leave and games become obsolete. Moreover, the Tanki developers must make a living while supporting the running of their game. And so, clearly, when their game begins to die they will do one of three things. They can try to milk as much money as they can from the playerbase with the understanding that the game will die sooner. They can throw money to the wind and try to satisfy the wants of the players without concern for the effect it will have for their livelihood. They can find a balance between money and keeping players (of course, easier said than done). As many may agree, it is clear that the developers of Tanki have chosen the first option. Updates that offer massive, massive advantages to those spending top dollar to get good equipment while leaving F2P or light-buyer (LB) players in the dust have become the norm in Tanki, and in some ways it is what it is. Option 3, while probably preferable to everyone involved, can very easily become option 2, while it can also easily be seen by the playerbase as option 1 if not done delicately. By the way, if you don't believe me when I say that updates over the past while favour heavy buyers (HBs), I included a couple notable ones below, just since 2020 began. Mk7 update (drastically increased prices for everything and allowed buyers to unlock kits way earlier) Augment update (aside from the bad grammar, made it next to impossible for F2P/LBs to get alterations) Removal of kits from garage (unofficially made F2P options significantly harder to obtain) TK update (hugely increased shop prices, made LBs unable to do much with their money) Anyhow, the motivations of a game can generally be witnessed in their change-log, patch notes, or whatever the game happens to call their documentation of updates. As seen above, Tanki has implemented a variety of updates that have been very unfavourable for the majority of players, and as a direct result many players are leaving the game. I can say this with confidence, because throughout my time in Tanki I have known many, many people who are disgusted with the development of the game and plan to leave (or, at the very least, cease spending money and supporting the game). To stop this trend, of course, the updates released must be supported and requested by players. I’d like to examine something quite interesting, to prove a point about Tanki development. Because of forum rules on discussing other games, I will not mention the name of the game I am talking about, though some of you may recognize the references to its features. For simplicity, I will call it… hey, why not? I’ll call it Simplicity. Having been monitoring the updates to Simplicity for a couple months now, I can say with confidence that the developers have been listening to player feedback quite closely. They have, admittedly, an interesting game model - no advantage can be gained in-game by spending money, but the buyable features are rather cosmetic items that are at times highly sought after. Despite the fact that no one is motivated to buy anything because it will make them more powerful, the game is flourishing, and for one obvious reason: the game is fun. With a variety of features that allow community involvement (publicly available mod-packs that can be made and used by anyone and the ability to add maps to the game with no selection process), the game offers quite limitless opportunities for what can be done with some very simple mechanics. Obviously, no one would buy anything in a game that is not fun as a F2P player unless it provides augmented power! Now fast-track to Tanki 2019 (when I last played). It was, honestly, plain boring. Nothing was done in private battles, because barely anything was gained by playing them. So it’s off to MM… press space, hope that you happen to be using whichever gun is intentionally overpowered at the moment, and if for some reason your gear is worse than your opponent, just press 1 and you win the fight! Quite skill-less and very lacklustre, it’s not something that anyone would stay for (though, as discussed later, people do stay for some very major reasons). And so, you see all of the “Tanki propaganda” that is put out. “Oh, you silly players, you keep saying to revert the game to the good-old-days but you don’t even agree which years were the best!” Yada yada, of course what players are trying to say is to revert the update-making to a time when the happiness of the players was more important than the making of money, because here’s something that we all realize. Get the players, the money will take care of itself. And so we’re back to the game which I have code-named Simplicity. Of course, it is unfair to compare a new game to an old one, but we’ll go for it anyways. Here’s something novel: the developers recently added a new weapon… and it was underpowered! Those people who have solely been playing Tanki for a while might be absolutely baffled and snonkerdoozled at that notion, but it is absolutely true. The weapon had to be buffed twice before it was at a good level in comparison to other weapons. Compare that to Tanki, which intentionally makes new gear super overpowered so that people are compelled to buy it, and then inevitably nerfs it down into the Black Hole of Calcutta soon after and makes anothering thing ridiculously good. Or here’s another example: Simplicity recently tried to buff a less-used weapon, but it turned out that the given advantages made it better than every other weapon in the game. So within roughly 2 days, the weapon was nerfed back down to a reasonable level. Now, now, I hear you in the back there Semyon: “But wait, a game in which you don’t pay for weapons has nothing to gain from creating imbalance and so it is an unfair comparison!” I can only respond with a quote by Willy Wonka himself - my dear old fish, go boil your head! Remember I said that Simplicity is absolutely flourishing? They’re doing great, despite not having benefits to be gained by buying! And no, they don’t need to make the game bad to do so. That situation reminds me somewhat as similar to how Tanki used to be. Perhaps milking isn’t necessary for great profits, but good gameplay is? Anyhow, remember I said that there’s one reason why a lot of players stay? Let’s be honest, Tanki has one very major saving grace: the forum. This is incredibly useful, not only for gauging player response to updates, but also for retaining players that are loth to lose the community of the game. The forum has united many great friends over the years, and continues to do so. As mentioned by someone in the AWS, Tanki has (for instance) a great writing community of which I count myself honoured to be a member of. This writing is the only thing that has made me come back over the months, and it’s why I’m here today, because without that motivation to return I would not have monitored the development process. I say, good for Tanki for creating that - now capitalize! You have thousands of people who hear about game updates but don’t play, so get them back! Begin to make updates that encourage people to begin playing again, and keep them with continued good updates that allow people to play competently with gear acquired from free sources, because I guarantee you that when you get new people into a good game, some of them are inevitably going to pay. The Tanki developer team knew this once, but appears to have begun to view the game as a shipwreck that can be mauled as long as they get any money from inside it. Now, I’m not going to kid you, nor am I going to kid myself. The Tanki game model has taken a drastic turn to the worse, and I’m not optimistic enough to say that it can be saved. Of course, games do die eventually and so that fact of development has contributed to the mindset. So much would have to be changed to begin drawing players in again, and doing so might possibly lose a large percentage of HBs who are comfortable with winning without any skill being involved. But here’s what I say, and this I guess is the main part of my constructive feedback: Let the game go easy. Retain good memories of the game as it is now, rather than as it was then. If I ever heard of a game made by the lead developer of Simplicity, I would go check it out post-haste! But if I heard of another game in which the lead developer was Semyon Kirov, I honestly would not be interested - been there, done that. So regardless of whether Tanki dies a couple years earlier than it might have, combine the good memories of the game that once was with the game that Tanki ended as… Thanks for reading, Initiate

    Tanki Helper Application Portal: Reviewed

Greetings, everyone! Today, I decided to review the new Tanki Helper portal, where Tankers of a variety of ranks can apply to different helper positions! These are my first thoughts as I navigate around the website. Let me know down below what you think about the website! First off, I opened the website and logged in. The log in, as expected, was the same as for all Tanki platforms (barring logging into the game itself). After completing the Captcha human verification on my second try, I was greeted by the homepage, listing the jobs available and their number of vacancies. Overall, I love the streamlined look of the page, the easily accessible overviews, and (as mentioned) the vacancy counter. I particularly enjoyed the eSports background picture with the famed Aramid paint, which is the reward for eSports helpers who pass candidacy - I would even go so far as to suggest incorporating the special paints in each thumbnail, if possible. Anyhow, my only complaint with the home page was that the “Chat Moderator” overview was very, very long and looked out of place among the relatively short descriptions of the other jobs. After inspecting the home page, I went to the eSports part of the website (naturally, because I did a short stint as an eSports Reporter). I really like this list of jobs where the red ones are closed and the green ones are open for applications. If any changes were to be made, I would suggest having all the open ones at the top, and scrapping the alphabetical order. That way, you can quickly glance at what’s open without having to scroll too far. I decided to click on the eSports Reporter application for obvious reasons, and I was greeted by the screen which lays out exactly what the job entails, and what you need to have to qualify for the position. If it looks like the job fits you, you can press the “Submit” button, which is exactly what I did. Here’s where the magic starts; the first couple pages you see do improve visibility of jobs, but they didn’t radically change the feeling of applying for positions. This is where the new system comes into focus - the real update to the look and feel of the application process. Since this was my first time on the website, I had the same experience as anyone else might have on their first time applying for a job. Immediately, I had to link my Discord account to continue with the application. I absolutely loved this part, linking was a simple click of the button, and took me to an updated page. This one is what you’ll see after linking your account: it’s a field to fill in all the answers to the application questions. This is absolutely stunning compared to the previous system, which involved copying the required questions into a new topic and writing them out there. It makes the application a whole lot simpler, and I’d guess that it’s a lot easier for the people in charge of approving/declining applications to see at a glance if the applicant is someone they may be interested in. As mentioned, the application process is brilliantly easy and not hard to keep track of. I submitted my application to my old position, and I was then rerouted to screen showing all of my ongoing applications. If you navigate away from the page, it is very easy to get back - just click on your avatar on the top right corner, then click “My Applications”. It is worth noting that the limit for ongoing applications is one, meaning that until you are either accepted or declined for your last application, you can’t make another one. Finally, if you check Discord after making an application, you’ll be on a new server called “Recruitment Tanki Online - EN”. On this server, you will have a single channel that you can see which is automatically created with the number of your application. You are not able to send messages on this channel, it is merely for receiving info regarding your application. If you are accepted, this channel will presumably take the place of DMs, so you’ll get a notification there instead of directly from the Team Leader. And there you have it! That is Tanki’s new Helper application portal, and it is a tremendous upgrade. Despite the few aesthetic flaws that I pointed out, it is really a very good update for the application system. The sad thing is that I can’t keep using it, because it’s really quite enjoyable to apply for positions now. I hope you enjoyed this little review, and, as I said, feel free to let me know what you think of the website in the comments on this article. Till next time, - Initiate

    The Echoes of the Echelons

Did you know that sound waves never cease to exist? Let’s rewind a bit before I say why. Sounds are waves; vibrations travelling through the air. As those vibrations travel through the atmosphere and into your eardrum, they affect objects in small ways. When a sound is loud enough, for instance, it can break glass. Infinitely more sensitive than glass is your eardrum, and sounds that can break glass can damage your ears. So what exactly happens to those waves? As stated, nothing. They just keep rolling, and rolling, and rolling… getting infinitely smaller, never reaching a state of nonexistence. However, it is impossible for us to detect these sound waves. They are so small that they are lost to us forever - almost. Take a good listen. Drink in whatever you hear. What is contacting your eardrums right now? At this very instant - what could it be? Perhaps it’s the voice of Adolf Hitler, booming the promise of freedom for the Germans, and the groan of the Jews under his iron rod. Perhaps it is the sublime thundering of the guns of Napoleon Bonaparte, with which he ruled the empires of Europe for his golden age. Maybe it’s the piteous cries for help that rose from the living grave of Ohain. It may be the clash of bronzen shields and spears as the Spartans repelled the attacks of men ready to destroy themselves for the beauty of one great lady. It could possibly be the words, whispered in the moonlight, that once meant so much and now are used so flippantly: “I love you,” the tenderest sound that could escape the lips of the one whom you would die for. Perhaps ‘tis the greatest words ever spoken by a man: It is finished! as Lucifer’s foil breathed for the last time in a quarter-fortnight. Perhaps it is the humble confession and the broken conversion of one who is desperate for light. It may be the hero of Waterloo, dying with the word Merde! on his fractured lips, or the villain of Watergate, sentenced to prison for deeds done and prospected. Maybe it is even the last heart-rending chill-inducing monologue of the King of England at Agincourt, and the twang of bowstrings gathering pace as the dusky horses of the Francophones became crimson in their ultimate distress. The sound of trumpets, sounding the advance, and the dying throes of those sentenced to the sword. It could be the cries of the men and women sent to the devouring monster, the guillotine, for nothing but the “de” in their name. Perhaps it is the thundering explosion of Apollo 1 severing short the lives of four brave men who devoted themselves to their generation’s greatest mission, or the thundering applause of the crowds as Yuri Gagarin made history and contention in one moment. Or maybe it’s the sweet, falling melodies of Für Elise, trembling in the moonlight. Perhaps it’s the cacophony of emotion in Ode to Joy, and Beethoven’s delightfully unrealistic wish for a utopia on a broken earth. It could be wind in the trees or on the mountain-side, or the whispering of a generation gone with it. It could be the thundering words of Martin Luther King Jr. as he proclaimed that he had a dream, and the echoes of his dream in every heart. It could be the crack of the pistol that ended his life and gave birth to his movement. Perhaps it’s the yelling, shouting, rioting, looting, police-assaulting crowds of overgrown toddlers who even now defile his dream by claiming that to make equal is to make unequal. It could be the “reverse-racism” of the Chicago Sun-Times as they capitalize the black skin colour but not the white in their articles. It could even be the crashing of oceans on the shores and ships of the Vikings, off to make war with their neighbours. It could be the screams of the Romanovs in that cellar in Yekaterinburg, or the rumours that one had survived. It could be the fevered celebration of the winner, and the despondency of the loser. It could be the heroic assault on the pillbox and the click of a grenade pin coming out. It may be the roar of the guns opening fire on the men running towards them, and the men littering the ground with blood. It could be the twinkle of water on a thirsty rose, or the twinkle of knowledge on a thirsty mind. It could be the joy of the one who’s love is requited, and the tears of the one who has gained no return splashing in the river before the final jump, the final struggle. It could be McWatt singing out “Oh well!” and flying into his mountain. Whatever it is, you might not hear it. But it’s there. History lives on in the lives of our sound waves. One day, your voice will be heard among them; among the echoes of the echelons.

    Till Nine Immemorial

Take the number 1. Simple, right? 1 is among the least complex numbers in the entirety of the Arabic numeric system. Those who speak a descendant of Proto-Germanic employ this system to indicate certain values. But wait. Add a “.” to 1. You end up with “1.”. Still the same number, though to a degree of precision not present in the first. But add a 9 after that decimal point, and you end up with a number that is nearly 2: 1.9. Adding another 9 gives you 1.99. What about 1.999? Guess what? You can continue adding value to the number 1.999 (repeating), but you will never reach 2. So here’s food for thought: you can always be better, and you can never be perfect. What does this apply to? Literally everything. Writing? Check. Math? Check. Science? Check. Tanki? Check. Life? Check check check. Ask yourself this question, and answer honestly. Are you a good person? Well first, define “good person.” Perhaps someone who’s on the right side of the moral scale - someone who stands up for what is true and opposes the evil in the world. Now picture yourself, a newborn, as the number 1. Not perfection. Not 2. But you are simple; pure in a sense. Add 9's and take away 9's for every single good and bad deed you’ve done. Told a lie? Take away a 9. Stood up for the lives of the millions of innocent children slaughtered every year at the altar of choice? Add a 9. Now add these 9's and reach your final calculation; I guarantee you that it won’t be two. You’re not perfect, nor can you be. The Morning Star made it impossible. However, you can definitely try. Maybe it is not the path's destination that matters, but rather the route that is success, for what it's worth. But perfection is not by any means necessary in all of its impossibility. Were it a just universe, we would all fall into darkness eternal. But fortunately justice is tempered with mercy. We all have our path to perfection. Have you found it yet?

    When the Grass Grows

Have you ever heard of a grass-blade? Hopefully. You’ve crushed millions of them in your lifetime. Have you heard of a tank? No, no, they’re not synonymous. Crushing tanks is like crushing the earth, only smaller and it’s made of metal. Because it’s not supposed to be the Earth. The Earth is a place where we can get protected from everything that’s not so great for life outside of our little atmosphere. Kind of like a tank - you know, bullets whizzing outside of the protective armor, the frantic sound of the battle and the frantic loading of shells. A tank is the greatest battle machine ever devised, bar none except everything that’s better. Because in a tank, you have a sense of security. You feel invincible - you know that no matter what happens, you’re going to stay alive and well inside the stomach of your metallic monster. Not that I would know, because I’ve never been in a tank. But you always spawn again if something goes wrong, right? Well, yes, and that’s because what happens in your tank won’t affect you. After all, in a virtual world you virtually die and are none the worse for it when you make a return to the sunlit lands. But here’s what some people miss: perhaps this game does not directly cause change, but even if the grass doesn’t die, it certainly doesn’t grow in Tanki or any other game. Trust me, I know it. You can’t crush the grass but you can’t have a manicured lawn either. And while you’re at your computer, the grass is growing outside. If left to itself, the grass will die.Take a look, right now, to your nearest outlet to the sky. The sky! One can’t imagine what is up there - we’re just a speck in the universe! Stars, nebulae, planets. Did you know that science itself knows nothing? Science knows nothing, it’s we humans who take it, craft it, use it, and at times twist and exploit it. The human brain is the greatest thing in all creation. We humans - yes, you and I - we are giants in this speck of a corner of nothingness and everything. And yet life itself is a mystery to us giants. We can take life, and harm life, or do good for and with it, but we cannot give life itself to anything. Nor can we sustain life without the famed object reflected in the mirror of Luna - that king among the slaves of our solar system and prince of mediocrity among it's own kind, the sun. All things rely on the sun for energy. All the way up the food chain, it is that solemn and awe-inspiring pile of nuclear fusions held together by the gravity of mass that gives us the ability to keep on living. And what does that mean? Nothing, and everything. It’s the beauty of it that you can make what you please of the fact that we are nothing but atoms held by an indescribable bond known as life. It’s a miracle, plain and simple. Life stalls in a game like Tanki - it’s a great place to go and make some virtual (or even, if you’re lucky, real-life) friends, but what happens here means so much less than what happens out there. So here’s what you do, and don’t chortle into your cappuccinos until you hear me out: you sit down on the veranda with your aforementioned cappuccino, check out the clouds, and then think about life, death, and everything in between. Bring some existentialism to your life. And then look at the grass. Because that is a miracle, yes sir. It's a miracle when the grass grows.
