Hello dear readers! Today we’ll see how to create your own tournament on Tanki Online. Organising events can be interesting in order to gain some experience, and in order to create a community, if this is your dream to do so. If you’d rather play with a group of friends, this can be a super fun competitive event to see who’s the best! In this article, you’ll be able to first see how to organise yourself, and then, on a second part we’ll give you some tips in order to find some tournament ideas in order to make them the most attractive possible. Here’s a visual overview of the article’s plan: I - How to organise by yourself? II - What tournaments could you make? I — How to organise yourself? There are many ways to create your own tournament, in this part we’ll see how to begin with your tournament community, as well we will see how to manage your tournaments. First of all, make sure to create a discord server, you can click right here. Once you did make your discord server, make sure to set it up, you would need to create the appropriate channels for it, first of all make sure to make an announcement channel which you will use to announce everytime there is a tournament, then you would need a general channel for your members to discuss about the tournaments. Once you’ve made the basics about your discord server, make sure to use challonge, which you can find right here. If it’s purpose had to be resumed in a few sentences: It is a tool which you use to create your brackets, and it works for any kind of tournaments. Once you’ve familiarised yourself with Challonge, you’re ready to create your first registration form! I would personally suggest you to use Google form. It is a tool for you to collect the answers, which you will use for the registrations. In the form itself, it would be best to stay simple and to request for the in-game nickname, along with the discord nickname and the player’s consent that he did read the rules and that he agrees with them. Talking about the rules, it is important to make your rules the most precise as possible and to think about everything, so this way, violations can be treated. Coming back to the form, it would be a good idea to make something similar to the picture below: Congratulations, now you can open your registrations! It is advised to leave them open for two or three days to give some time to players to register. Once your tournament is ready, the following ideas are a suggestion, you should either set a time for your participants or let them be free regarding the time, but then you would need to set a deadline to play the match. In both cases, a special channel would be a good idea for your participants to discuss, this way you would be able to let them discuss, the channel itself should be private and visible only by the referees and by the two participants/both teams that play together. Once the time is set, you would need to join the battle and to spectate it in order to make sure everything works fine. As for the violations, it is your job to judge the punishment for it, it could be a warning, a disqualification, a tournament ban, but note that every case is different and each case should be treated differently. If you’re reading this, congratulations, you finished the first part and you’re ready to organise and to manage your tournament. In the next part we’ll see what kind of tournaments you could organise. This part will mostly be supposed to give you ideas about your tournament. II — What tournaments could you make? Now that you know how to organise your own tournament from scratch, you might be wondering what type of tournament you could start. Indeed, “tournament” by itself doesn’t mean a lot more than competition. You still need to choose the format of the tournament, the team size, the gamemode and the battle format. But let’s start with the first decision you will have to take, which could influence your future decisions on the aforementioned aspects. You have to choose whether your tournament will be more on the competitive and serious side, or more on the fun side. Most serious and competitive tanki tournaments are held in the Capture The Flag (CTF) gamemode, which leads to it almost monopolising the tournament scene. There is a reason for this: CTF encourages aggressive, interesting gameplay, solely because of the way the gamemode works. This does not mean that you should absolutely host CTF tournaments only: Team DeathMatch (TDM) tournaments are not unheard of, and you could also try out some “unconventional” gamemodes that fall under the radar when it comes to tournaments. Why not try organising an Assault (ASL) tournament, baseball-style, only counting the points of the attacking team? For what is about fun tournaments, the gamemode you choose isn’t the main problem, it’s more about finding a diverting custom gamemode, or a special touch that will make the participants compete like never before. One example of what I call a fun tournament that Tanki has hosted in the past is tankiball. You could either host a tournament with a twist that has been done before, or use your creativity to host a brand new one. After having chosen a gamemode, you’ll need to determine equipment restrictions (or not), as well as a team size, so that fights are balanced - you wouldn’t want a team of 5 battling against a single participant, would you? Well, this is all up to you. I can’t really guide you on this one. Although, take particular attention to this step because it is related to the number of players willing to participate: If you have very few members in your tournament community, organising a team competition could make the tournament very short, to the point where it could even be hard to call it a tournament. However, team tournaments may bring new people to discover your community, your tournaments. Choose wisely! Finally, once you get to know how many players are willing to take part, you can create the bracket and choose the tournament format. Usually depending on the number of participants, you can choose between Playoffs, a Pool Phase followed by Playoffs, or even a Swiss-system tournament (not necessarily) followed by Playoffs. The Playoffs may be single-elimination, or double-elimination, if you believe in second chances. The round winners can be decided in a single match, or it could also be Best-Of (BO) 3s, or a BO5s, maybe even BO7s? The number of matches per round could be ramping up as the tournament goes on… or it could stay the same. There might be more customisation in the choice of the tournament format than you think.
