The Shrug Reaction

Greetings everyone! ?

Today's topic is slightly different than usual. Lately, we came across a situation where certain users would react to each other's messages with the "Shrug" reaction regardless of the content they post. Unfortunately, the situation had escalated. Leaving us no choice but to remove the Shrug reaction for good. We considered the option to replace the above-mentioned reaction with something else, but we came to the conclusion that the situation would remain the same.

We understand that the majority of the users did not use the reaction in a negative way. Even so, we encourage our users to have proper discussions. If you disagree with one's post, let them know why with a post of your own, in a respectful manner of course!

Oh well, it had to be done...

Started off with <Confused>, then <Hmm>, and then ended with <Shrug> ?

(Maybe I got the timeline wrong, not sure ?)

That got me thinking...I wonder if the next reaction used for disagreement will be "Sad ?"

How sad, to be upset by a forum emote... oh well, modern users for modern times.

I'd like to see the upvote/downvote feature again for a week... lol imagine the absolute chaos.

Yeah. I mean, I didn't see a problem with the spam - it basically just was used as a dislike, was it not? I don't see the problem with it. But some people really wanted it to be a dislike button that only they could use, because they didn't like that others could disagree with their posts.

An entirely unnecessary change, but also an entirely a neutral one. .

...Why... is it so hard.. to have a working "I disagree" button? This is a game forum for discussion; disagreement is totally valid.

Well we all tried to make it work, it's not the first time we have dealt with such a situation, but the continuous problems overtime made us reach this conclusion.

No matter how one sees it, shrug will already be used as a negative disagreement to "I don't like your posts" and in extreme cases, will lead to situations like these.

Hence, it was viable to remove it.

Yep.

Exactly, this is a game forum for discussion. Most of the users would just use the 'disagree' reaction without stating why they disagree with one's post/opinion. This is the opposite of what we are looking for.

Certain people (myself included) find it a bit annoying to open the forum and see 30 notifications of useless shrug spam.

If you disagree with a certain post, you should reply and explain why.

Worst solution, I don't like the reactions become all just positive, like most social media apps. Forum is mainly for discussions.

They're the same type of people giving dislike before watching the video.

Sometimes my post get removed or the topic get closed, or a certain moderator set a limit that any post after his opinion will get removed.

Well, it’s nice to see at a glance which ideas users disagree with without having to spend time reading everyone’s individual opinion.

Hmm was for "interesting" posts

Every single one of the reactions that I mentioned (Confused, Hmm, Shrug) had a purpose — Confused for... well... showing that you didn't understand a post; Hmm for interesting/intriguing posts, as you said... And  Shrug for "I don't know, maybe"...

But these reactions were used as dislikes, and there's no denying that.

What's "wrong" with dislikes? Nothing! But most (if not all) humans would naturally feel bad or demotivated if they suddenly start getting genuine hate for their opinions. Ideally, we should take criticism in a positive way, but then it's not fair to expect this attitude from everyone...  : (  We cannot always control our reaction when someone criticises or mocks us, right?

Also, we all feel like replying to the people who disagree with us and then perhaps even insult them. This does lead to a vicious cycle of toxic replies and counter-replies (although this doesn't happen all the time) that just make the forum a very unpleasant place.

Uhh that rude players who misuse these meaningful reaction ... .. wait - wasn't the old Confused  counter kept for Hmm? They should have represented the Hmm while Confused was exist, to see its real usage. But what they did - Hmm was just a direct ancestor of Confused, in the same day they removed Confused they represented the Hmm, which left us with no viable option of disagreeing than Hmm.

Saw it is not used for provoking. Eventhough it's annoying and meaningless.  For me I see - Saw it have to be removed - Thanks&Agree are just a variants of Like, which have to be removed.

don't know how to phrase it but better than before?

"Saw it" and "sad" can be used as dislike, but they can never be same as real downvote, confused or shrug. They can cry, but shrugs won't be coming back especially after missuse everyone witnessed.

First thing that comes to my mind is discussion about balance (I do that often that's why). If someone disagreed they could have filled the post with shrugs + also get their buddies to pump up those numbers, which could have make someone's statements look ridiculous. That was problematic because it was so effortless, they did not have to bother replying and at least explaining why they disagree.

So what will happen now? Let's say I make the post about autocannon being UP and that it needs buff. All they can do react with "sad", which may be interpreted as empathy/understanding for OP. I will surely try to post about such topics in way that reacting with "sad" may not be interpreted as dislike. "Saw it" can be useful simply as extra reaction, which coupled with other reactions might be interpreted as an interest in topic, well...at least someone bothered to react to a post and that's in my book better than complete ignore. E.g. someone would probably skip a little bit older post if it has no reactions, but even 3 "saw it" might peak his interest.

Edit: they can still spam in order to be annoying with notifications, that personally wasn't to big of issue because I don't post too much so I usually check reactions directly on my posts.

Add "Wow" emoji plsssss so i can spam it just like in Facebook  i think it would be cool neutral...? emoji.
Also RIP Shrug had so much fun memories when my existence alone would trigger half of the forum after i posted a Hot Take and then i would get spammed with Shrugs... fun times...
