Interview with Hazel -- Thoughts?

A lot of surprising answers. It's great that he's up front about many of the concerns for the project and giving us valuable information about the the state of it. I've always said the lack of transparency breathes an awful atmosphere in the game.

I do like that he's planning to replace the ASL mode with the new bomb cart mode, I'm all for it. But for that to happen they need to do it is that they need to do with bots.

There's finally some insight as to what contracts might be.

I'm still a bit skeptical about the upcoming containers to keys conversion. So I'll hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

That's all I remember, but taspens should have a summary made soon.

As good as it can get. Answers make sense too. I mean he's not going to tell you the secrets due to legal reasons or keeping the hype for the future. Was annoying though how the babies cried in chat expecting for hazel to just reveal all the secret formulas and stuff though lol. I mean how many lead game devs just talk to their community like that?

The interview was alright; it was certainly a step in the right direction.

I personally have many concerns regarding granades. I feel like the battles are way too fast and chaotic already; granades will only add another layer of complexity on top of everything. There is a risk that players will start to feel overwhelmed, and also that players who only enjoy camping will have their primary source of fun ruined (and they will leave; no, they won't suddenly change the way they play the game).

I don't know; maybe age is starting to catch up to me, but I feel like there is already way too much to keep track of in this game: different turrets shooting at you and having to switch protection modules, augments, status effects, hulls with different ODs, drones, having to defend and attack constantly, etc. Now add granades on top of that. Isn't it a bit too much? I fear that the maps are going to become an absolute mess. Just imagine the current situation, but with AOE effects everywhere, smoke, and who knows what else.

Nobody answered the question why protection modules costs each 1.2 Million of crystals

They never give adequate answers that affect players in a negative way.

Of course I can answer that with ease, CASH.

The game is far to complicated, far to pricey and with tonnes of lag, with remastered maps causing more lag than we already have.

I don't mind them making cash from players, that is what all on-line games do. What bothers me is the fact that they "NEVER" implement any ideas from players into the game that actually help players out. A prime example is the crystal/XP ratio, which is forcing players to rank way to quickly and be nowhere near enough ready (garage) to have any chance at competing on a reasonable level.

Losing half of the mobile players would be great if you ask me, but it looks like they are going to rely heavily on the kids no lifing the game.

I heard hazel say that TO used to get over 100.000 players on-line. Begs the question why they only have a fraction of that now. I wonder were it all went wrong?

Saying the game was MORE P2W "back in the day" is just ludicrously wrong. Todays TO is very much dominated by P2W and very much over priced for what you actually get for your cash. I started this game back in 2013 and have seen the over priced changes they have brought in over the years.

On a side note. I'm up to 34 mins in the video (it's very hard work) Taspens a bit of advice. If your going to do an interview then interact more with the person your interviewing, don't just sit there nodding your head and grunting now and again, it does you no favours. If you ever do another one, then get your script ready well in advance and pipe in now and again with searching questions that most players would like answered. I didn't even know this interview had happened which is a shame as I would have liked to have joined the call alongside you, which I just no would have made hazels day.

Having this come up with some overbearing noise was not good.

Screenshot_37.png?ex=6552e3b4&is=65406eb4&hm=704c10c26d9581e142bf403e350055a7151832086f71712c95e7fdcd086decc7&

So augments get nerfed when added to normal containers. Is this because they have served their purpose as cash making aspects of the game. This is the retort you (taspens) should have said to hazel. I need a lie down, this is so painful to watch.

Unbelievable. Smoking your own team will only lead to in fighting between team mates. Camping is an art if done properly and good campers help the team enormously.

So augments are not P2W, so why nerf them when the rest of the player base can get them from containers then! If an augment is "MEH" according to hazel then they will over buff it on release, but it's not to make money. Of course it isn't hazel. And you wonder why those of us with more than 1 brain cell never believe a word you say.

50 mins in, this is such a grind. Lol, 55 mins in and someone asking if they will add voice chat to the game. Can you imagine how many players would be banned in the first 24 hrs. I would be the first one banned forever. Voice chat would be great but would cause sooooooo much bad blood it would not last beyond the 24 hr mark. This is why we have discord, to chat amongst friends in battle without any restrictions from the game itself, which is just fine by me. I get to say what I want in any tone I want without some bedroom warrior giving me grief over my colourful language. 55.20 secs. Hazel swearing like a dockyard worker and not a ban in sight ? go hazel go. More of the same, get stuck in there, say it how it is. Nice one hazel, for the first time in this interview I actually warmed to you.

1hr43 mins.

Screenshot_38.png?ex=6552ffa2&is=65408aa2&hm=39a577179423049b29de112f28eceea3fea8b16c1b8a5da0de23587f1af569fb&

New skins, shot effects, etc are not really answering the big questions players want answered. Cherry picking questions that require no hard answers is a cop out.

2 Hrs 4 mins.

The old Madness map was just THE best map they ever created and should be brought back.

The top half was great for fighting the enemy and the bottom was for those that enjoyed capping flags, great map and needs to come back asap.

Screenshot_40.png?ex=65530a3e&is=6540953e&hm=69d2f75c76f96b45e6090f0341abb8dc2f2a142fa1d417acb7d171f17d9d0c12& No need to be harsh, just push forward the questions PLAYERS want answered that affect game play in a negative way. This is something you (taspens) did not do and as a result the interview as such did little to appease/reassure the player base.

Bottom line

The interview yielded little information that I would regard as relative to actual game play and as such became boring.

Key questions did not get answered and also some key questions did not even get put forward, not that they would have been answered.

The interview was a good idea but achieved nothing regarding players concerns about the game.

Overall bottom line

Could have been so much better.

5/10 for the effort.

It is pricey yes. But tons of lag? No. Sure ping is high (explained 2 reasons why) and remastered maps are not laggy at all. I get more FPS on HD Maps than older ones. Yes at first they we're laggy mess but now they're good. Even my low end 7 year old laptop could run HD maps with around 60+ FPS on average graphics while my high-end is at 250+. None of the people I know complain about lag in HD maps too with their average PCs. So upgrade your tech to around 2016 level at least... No dev is gonna give you a free PC

Probably because most of the ideas just break game economy in an instant? They implemented some of my ideas that were realistic and they're here right now. You know i'm not your tanki mod and i say bad and good stuff about this game so I don't think they were bias here or something.

If you actually started in 2013 then take off your pink glasses and you'll realise it was so much more P2W its not even funny. No triplet hammer and paladin monkey can replicate what "golden age of tanki" buyers could do with way less it's just they'll have to buy constantly instead of getting lucky once.

It's just stopping powercreep in the game artificially. Imagine if they didn't nerf it.

Let's say Helios is Level 5 in terms of power. and they decide to release new exotic toy. It has to be more OP than Helios to sell so...

Triplet is now Level 8 in terms of power. Oh? What's that? We need another toy!

Piercer Shaft is now Level 12 in terms of power. Congrats! You can now oneshot a heavy hull without double damage by just looking at it.

And with constant nerfing all the augments would stay at Level 4-7. Trust me you'd want for them to nerf the toys instead of powercreeping.

Any other points I left out it means I agree and have nothing to say.

oh-snap-surprise.gif

I am not going to comment on this because majority of my judgement is going to be considered biased anyway, but all I wanted to say is that every period of TO saw a fair share of P2W. Now if you compare money, there are expensive bundles right now due to inflation and also because of the less playerbase, and the bundles in the old times when used to refer the "Golden Age" of Tanki, were a lot cheaper (only when compared to today's scenario) but also they got notched down a bit due to the significant playerbase and an effective business economic model.

Purchasing supplies at that time can literally be compared to purchasing tankoins now, so imagine a time when major playerbase didn't even have a basic stock of supplies to use on a daily basis ( Not talking about 1000s, even 100 or 50 or 10 was a huge deal) and there were people drugging like every single second of the game.

(DO I get a Deja-Vu of F2ps not having much Tankoins to afford basic event passes or bundles on a frequent basis while buyers are roaming around with the latest augments and even the Tankoin Tank paint). That's exactly what used to happen, either take the 2017 period, 2015, majorly 2014 and the 2011 period.

ONLY the in-game parameters change and the cost, never the concept.

This has never been an idea of mine just an opinion, I hate mobile players. As for "MY" ideas, at least one of them would improve MM beyond recognition and the others would improve the game for the low ranks in particular by a large factor.

You being serious?

They never answer the questions players want answering, they cherry pick the questions they want to answer and the tough questions they just shrug off with some bull crap.

Nope it was not.

Todays P2W is off the scale and way, way more expensive.

Everything has shot up in price by at least 200%, so no it's not funny at all. The game is way more reliant on the P2W structure than it has ever been. It's also how they change the mechanics/setup of the game to try and force players to spend cash, like making module upgrades so pricey that you need countless millions to upgrade even half of them. (referring to the lower ranks)

I agree that nerfing is warranted for these OP gimmicks once they are in containers for all to get, (even though it's a smack in the face for F2P) It's the frequency of these OP gimmicks that bothers me. We have way to many gimmicks in the game and the augments are the main problem, I hate them, along with the floating hacks which are played mostly by MOBILE players.

I think you have misinterpreted my response to hazel. He was implying that augments were not there as cash grabs, I disagree with that assessment of his, they totally are cash grabs.

This pains me severely but I agree with your take on this.

The game as a whole has went from easy to understand and enjoyable to very complicated with most battles being a grind.

The game has many flaws which need addressing. Sadly those that can do something about these flaws (and the list seems endless) refuse to do so.

We all know it's a business and needs a good cash flow to maintain it, no problem with that.

The problem with the game is that nothing of worth regarding actual battles ever gets sorted, from the no-damage bug to the wall of names and notifications blocking your view of most of the battle. These two in particular need to be sorted and would not affect the game economy in the process.

These problems amongst many other relevant questions that need answers/fixing were never brought up in the interview. This was a wasted opportunity to press hazel for answers to ongoing problems, problems that seemed to have been sidestepped for irrelevant information for the most part.

Also, the idea that the game was more P2W back in the day is misleading because back then you could CHOOSE the battle you wish to play, whether it was a no supplies battle or XP/BP, etc.

Now, you are FORCED to play in matchmaking with all the toxic mega-buyers and that's the ONLY way to progress. PRO battles are just a gimmick now, even if they're more enjoyable than MM, at least for me.

EDIT: @LambSauce posted a reply here in a hour ago that I can no longer see. What the story behind this is one can only wonder, but his comment was directly critical of Hazel both as a person and with regards to many of his decisions. I will post my reply to him anyway.

( @LambSauce) You should have given him more pushback. I got the impression that you were not at all impressed by many of his suggestions, especially all the various grenades he wants to make. I understand, however, that doing this is not easy when as you say he comes off as authoritarian and condescending. I am glad to hear you voicing these concerns even if post hoc.

It seems to me that hardly anybody wants all these grenades in the game at all. A poll should be held to determine the community's interest. Complexity is already a problem, but also the extreme pace in many high rank games. For me, I find that the game is enjoyable primarily from lieutenant (192k xp) through to major general (692k xp). The best experience I would say is even matches where both teams are geared around MK5-6. Here there is a balance between painfully slow and stressfully fast turrets and hulls. Few people have the joke augments that make everything a pain.

I have two legend accounts with 9k+ gs, one with maxed crisis etc. I don't really play them, even if I preform well and have about a 1.5 k/d in regular games with most turrets. I instead started a few accounts and speedran them with the free three day premium to where I find the game to be enjoyable. With with regular play you easily "max out" a garage through MK levels 3-6 with a few of your fav turrets/ hulls and a drone of choice.

A couple of my new accounts are now at major general rank and games have become mostly against 9k gs players. The idea of spending hundreds and hundreds of hours as an underdog free player in these extremely stressful games, grinding to get op augments, armadillo and all that, this is a joke to me. I don't enjoy these games with top gear, and certainly not without it either. So I consider these accounts to be 'used up'. Maybe I'll start a couple more at an opportune moment.

Thanks for saving my time, as the interview is just too long and I don't think I would get really benefitted from it or if I can find it as fun. From this topic and the comments I get an idea about what the video was about. I'm not saying it's a bad interview, I think it's good for who's interested.

LOL - That's completely wrong. I have played since 2012 too, everything was accessible to purchase through garage, but since 2018 the game started to make buyer able to buy kits in earlier ranks then afterwards they started to explicitly making items available only through paywall.

What Mr. Hazel say only makes sense if he comparing the current game with the Tanki 2021 version at Hopper's release. Which doesn't make sense at all tbh. 2021 isn't the old tanki.

This is just eluding from the main topic. First, by this, you and developers confess that they were intentionally OP in the first place. Second why the need to introduce a more OP augment?

Speaking of Condescending, you have your harsh criticism right here in this topic, posted and argued by forumers, but we did not remove it, because the interview had both positive and negative feedbacks, and I like to keep it that way.

Or at least that was the experience from my side of view.

Voicing my opinion on the lead developer's mindset is "provocation and insult on a personal basis"? .... I assume that's what you're referring to. Come on, you're really stretching it there. At best it's a form of criticism, nothing "derogatory" there.

By your logic, every time Hazel includes a swear word or shows any criticism towards players, such posts should automatically be deleted.

No, it was not, not at all. LambSauce quoted him verbatim, and added that he acted like he was the only adult in the room. Not much more than that. And very on point. To set the bar for moderation this low is bizarre, it is like you are policing a safe space at an american high school where the most fragile determine what is an aggression. All adults that are willing to take part in public debate would be totally fine with what was said. Removing it is simple Stalin tactics.

When a lead developer does an interview it is highly warranted to discuss not just his content, but also his demeanor. There is all kinds of objections worded by the players on the game in this forum. When there is than a face off two sides, players will scrutinize for attitude and interaction dynamics.

The fact that developers and other staff are so active in this (player) forum is an exception from other games. They are, from a conversational point of view, here at the player's mercy. But then they hold the technical power to edit and doctor the conversation. The dynamic between Opex and Taspen is very weird, at times right out uncomfortable to watch. This same dynamic carries over into the forum where a sort of eerie atmosphere reigns. This whole "You cannon speak about things that we have decided that you cannot affect. What this is will be semi-veiled to you. etc " It's all very god-like.

Imagine if you said that to your parents. They'd probably punish you.

Imagine if you said that to your teacher. They'd probably send you to detention.

Imagine if you said that to your principal. They'd probably suspend you if not expel you.

Imagine if you said that to your friends. They'd probably unfriend you.

Imagine if you said that to your coworkers. Theyd Probably complain about you to the higher ups.

Imagine if you said that to your boss. They'd probably fire you.

All and rightfully so because it's a form of provocation and not to mention disrespectful.

Dude, in most of these examples, they are in a position of authority over you.

On the other hand, the lead developer of Tanki is providing a service. We the players are consumers of this service.

If we don't like the service being provided, we can leave AND/OR we are free to voice our opinions on this forum or elsewhere.

Obviously, the forum of course has rules about language used and stuff like that. No rules were broken.

By this logic you can claim every form of honest criticism is "provocation". Honestly you should apply to be a mod, you seem to follow their line of thinking to a T.

Also, the idea that the game was more P2W back in the day is misleading because back then you could CHOOSE the battle you wish to play, whether it was a no supplies battle or XP/BP, etc.

No one cared about that as no one wanted to pay the fee to enter these battles, because crystals used to be worth something.

Battles were always unbalanced because one team always had a buyer that got the next modification of their hull/turret 6 ranks before the free to play players could, by buying expensive kits. These players also paid for supplies, which free to play players didn't have back then, making them even stronger than they already were.

You were facing people with Viking M2 at the Warrant Officer 5 rank, with full supplies, whilst you were Warrant Officer 3 with Smoky and Wasp M1, without any supplies. You were dying at least as fast as you are dying now to the paying audience.

Kits were a complete P2W mess when they were first introduced, in your golden era of around 2013, but somehow everyone seems to have forgotten that. People back then were complaining literally as much as they are nowadays about P2W. It was not better.

And before kits, before the re-balance, you were able to have a full M3 garage at the Lieutenant rank. P2W players had that, supplies on top, and the free to play players were still barely managing to get even M2 at the brigadier ranks.

The game nowadays is at least as much pay to win as back then. I don't know if you all were very young and forgot all of this, but the game has always been a mess. It was not better for free to play players back then.

With all due respect @PirateSpider, you clearly are at the far end on a vulnerability spectrum. That is entirely ok, but you can not expect society to cater to your vulnerability. You cannot dictate an internet space to be your escape room from the real world and other people. Do you ever read the debate pages in newspapers? Maybe watch a debate from the British House of Commons on youtube? Public debate is harsh - as it should be. If you need reasons for why it should be so, read some early Greek political texts about the space of the agora.

Your quoted text does not come close to any of it. It is a dry and in fact rather bland trope describing the fact at hand - as the speaker sees it. There is no ad hominem or spite, not even sarcasm.  As for your poem:

My parents are humanists who taught me how to meet criticism adequately, whether it is just or unfounded. Good people will never punish their children. Ever.

Imagine if you said that to your teacher. They'd probably send you to detention.

In western Europe, dissent and voicing of opinion is encouraged, also in the school system. You are never discouraged from voicing your opinion, even if ludicrous. This is because we have faith in the public sphere to sort out the cacophony of voices and make judgements. In order to do this (getting rid of the ludicrous), harsh means are necessary, hence why public debate is so harsh.

Imagine if you said that to your principal. They'd probably suspend you if not expel you.

Principal would probably tell me to run for student council.

Imagine if you said that to your friends. They'd probably unfriend you.

If your friends unfriend you for making earnest, personal remarks in private conversation... Honestly I don't even know which culture this could occur in. Poem bad.

Imagine if you said that to your coworkers. Theyd Probably complain about you to the higher ups.

Maybe you would. Boss goes ?‍♂️

Imagine if you said that to your boss. They'd probably fire you.
This is actually possibly true. There are narcissistic and autocratic company heads. Public debate, however, should not be moderated by their standards.
