Story [Issue 11] Darien's Chronicle: Part 1, The Journey.

I gazed out at the beautiful horizon that reached on forever, out past the walls of my home. It was just another ordinary day in Kungur. The sun beat down on my hull as I drove slowly across the bridge. A few days ago for my birthday, my parents upgraded my Hornet. I was still getting used to having my M3 Hornet and M3 Railgun. It felt strange, I almost felt almost grown up, having a fully upgraded combo. Suddenly something peculiar happened. Everyone stopped moving; all across the battlefield everyone was frozen. A nearby Wasp completely stopped dead in his tracks, a Mammoth which was just jumping off the bridge froze in midair with a look of sheer terror on his face. Everything was quiet. “Help me Darien,” yelled my cousin Wayne from somewhere on the other side of the map, “I’m completely frozen, I can’t move!” Soon everyone was crying out, I stared in dumbfounded horror at the frozen battlefield. I tried to swallow, but my mouth felt as dry as a desert. I knew what was happening, but I couldn’t believe it. We were lagging. Sebastian Mally was controlling our game. Years ago, a tankman was born, his name was Sebastian Mally. He quickly became very successful, he started a Russian clan that later went on to win multiple clan championships. He gained the honor and respect of many tankmen. But his victory was short lived. One day his worst nightmare came true, he was hacked. He lost all control of his tank and he now lives in fear of the hacker who poses him like a demon. Now days, the hacker inside of him travels from server to server, hacking games and making them lag, freezing them forever. As I saw it, I had two choices. I could stay here and do nothing for the rest of my life and watch as my family and friends die. Or I could leave Kungur and go to the great city of Dusseldorf, where Sebastian lives. Once there, I might have a hope of resetting the match. I pondered over the decision for about three seconds before I had my final answer. I briefly said goodbye to everyone, then equipped a nitro and bolted for the closest wall. Fortunately, I leaped over the wall easily clearing the top. Unfortunately I hadn’t stopped to think about the landing. I sailed towards the solid ground gaining speed every second. When I finally hit, I landed hard on my side, gasping for air as my engine stalled. Eventually my engine started to cough and splutter and started up again. I quickly took a look around to get my bearings. Behind me were the walls of Kungur, in front of me reaching off in all directions were hills and fields as far as I could see. From over a hill to my left about a hundred meters away I could hear the faint noise of engines, so I decided to follow the noise. After a minute or so I reached the top of the hill and gazed down at the other side. A group of tanks stretched out about thirty meters away. I counted twenty one Mammoths all slowly driving forward in perfect line up. They were all equipped with Thunders and various expensive paints that gleamed in the sunlight. Ten in front and ten in back, in the middle of the group was an administrator. Then it struck me, I didn't have the faintest clue on how to get to the city of Dusseldorf. I didn't have a map or directions or anything, which forced me to follow the group from a distance and hope they were traveling to Dusseldorf. For what seemed like an eternity we drove through fields, forests and over hills. Once in a while we would pass other maps. From inside I would hear the shouts and laughter of tanks. The sun was just starting to set behind the hills in the distance, turning them a crimson orange as we reached the gates of Dusseldorf. The sight of the city boosted my spirits just enough to give me some more energy. I slowly moved closer to the group until I was at the near back of the group as we entered the city gates. Just as soon as we entered the city walls hundreds of aromas seemed to fill the air. Lining the streets was a market place where tankmen and tankwomen were selling hundreds of different things in their own little booths. I passed a booth that was selling paints, another was selling supplies and yet another recruiting new moderators. After half an hour I realized that I’d driven across the whole city without even noticing it. All the hustle and bustle fascinated me, since I was used to Kungur. The sun had almost vanished from the sky when I’d finished looking around so I started driving away from the crowds to get back to the task at hand. I only had one problem. I didn’t have a clue where Sebastian lived. I chose to ask one of the hundreds of tanks that swarmed around the market place. “Excuse me sir,” I asked an old dictator. “What can I help you with, young lad?” he said as he raised his head. “Would you happen to know where I could find Sebastian Mally?” The tank quickly turned deathly pale as he stared into my eyes in horror. “W-wh-wh-why?” he stuttered without taking his eyes off me. “I need to see him,” I answered, not feeling as sure of myself as before, “it’s urgent.” “He sure doesn’t like being bothered; nobody’s seen him in ages. A few weeks ago a team of four moderators were sent down into his labyrinth and…” his voice faltered. “What labyrinth, what happened?” I demanded. “Old Sebastian lives in a labyrinth, the entrance is over on the other side of the city,” he started, pointing over to one of the far corners of the city, “many tanks have tried to go in and attack him. Nobody has ever come out alive, including those four moderators. If you must, you can go in, but I guarantee you may never come out.” “Thanks,” I said as I started to leave. “Good luck,” he added as I drove away briskly. The entrance to the Labyrinth was a jagged hole on the side of a building near the edge of the city. On either side of the gaping hole stood a guard, they were equipped with Viking/Ricochets which glinted in the setting sunlight. I felt their eyes boring into me as I stood at the opening, motionless. “Hey there,” I started timidly, “Errm, Uhhh, may I please…” I was cut off as the Viking on the left started talking in a low gravelly voice. “No supplies are allowed passed this point. This establishment is a no supplies residence.” He said while staying completely expressionless, “please hand over all of your supplies and pay the fee of five hundred crystals.” Reluctantly I opened my supply compartment and emptied everything from it. Then began digging through all of my other compartments trying to find spare crystals. I collected four hundred and thirty four crystals and they let me through. I took one look back and then began the journey into the labyrinth. The darkness closed in on me as I drove deeper into the tunnel. To be Continued... -
