valid Extended respawn option in battle settings
MandolinMarc replied to MandolinMarc in Ideas and Suggestions
Longer respawns absolutely would slow down gameplay, and Tanki is all about fast-paced, in-and-out gameplay. But at higher levels, slower gameplay often tends to be more interesting since it requires more awareness and more deliberate maneuvers, and slower games are also often more team-based. That's why at high levels, matches are often a lot smaller than low/mid level matches; smaller matches have slower gameplay. Many XP/BP matches, for example, have just 2-4 players on each team, whereas low/mid level matches typically have 8-12 players on each side (unless they're being played on a small map). Bigger XP/BP matches often become less tactical and more run-around-and-shoot. So, extended respawns would allow bigger XP/BP matches (with 5-8 players on each team) to retain a slower, more tactical gameplay. I don't think it would be a good idea to enable extended respawns in small XP/BP matches (with 2-3 players per team), since gameplay in those games is already at a good pace. -
valid Extended respawn option in battle settings

Good point, corpses can be pretty pesky which is why extended respawns would need to be an option (as opposed to being mandatory). That said, corpses can be strategically used for blocking, which would become a more significant part of the game with extended respawns. Also, they can make navigating the map and getting to flags more interesting. -
valid Extended respawn option in battle settings

In Tanki's ESports server, tanks take longer to respawn after being destroyed. This makes gameplay more complex and interesting, since destroying other tanks and avoiding being destroyed become more significant. It forces players to be deliberate and tactical in all their maneuvers, instead of spawning, shooting, dying, and respawning a few seconds later. Also, the extended respawns cause tank corpses to stay on the battlefield much longer, which adds another layer of complexity to the game. It's true that many tankers aren't involved in the competitive, tactical side of the game, and prefer being able to get back into the battle only a few seconds after their tank is destroyed. But the recent surge in popularity of XP/BP battles shows that there is an increasingly large community of tankers interested in and inspired by the complexity of high-level gameplay. Adding an extended respawn option to PRO battles would add even more depth to high-level gameplay, which would help this community of tactical tankers thrive and grow. In turn, Tanki's ESports scene would become bigger and more competitive. And as games like League of Legends, Counter-Strike, and Dota have shown, growth in ESports is the key to the growth of a game. So, not only would extended respawns make high-level gameplay more interesting, it would also help Tanki continue to grow and evolve. Let me know what you think! -
Thanks so much for that response. You're right, a lot of the I&S posts are variants of similar ideas that just aren't going to work out.

They did not specifically say it, but sales are getting smaller. But smaller sales are being balanced by discounts on items you already have other items of the same modification of, and the update that allows you to get M3 items without having their M2s, etc.

Not to be a joykill but there's already a thread for this and it belongs in Off-Topic

^ agreed... it's not an interesting game at all, to me at least.

You sir, are a hero. I can't thank you enough.

Er... new battle format?

Sounds awesome! In my opinion, I'd much rather have this crazy 10x gold box event then a 50% sale. At the end of the day, it's not about having the best equipment, it's about having fun and gold boxes are the definition of fun :D

Two remarks on the feedback given in this thread: 1. The majority of opinions in favor of this update are rather well thought-out, while most (but not all) negative opinions seem to be more like knee-jerk responses. 2. I see lots of posts saying that "Tanki wants more of our money." This update is a change in the way the game generates revenue. One of the intentions of this change is without a doubt to increase revenue, but let's not be foolish and say that this is the only intention.
-
C'mon guys, let's not pretend like 15% from everything is going to ruin the game. It only makes sense that those who support Tanki financially should be rewarded... you have to remember that no game is free.

This upcoming update is one that is drastically changing the way the game generates revenue, and I feel that many players are failing to see the upside of this new business model. It'll without a doubt generate more revenue for the game, which will allow TO to grow further and to invest in more new endeavors like Unity. Also, the addition of Premium accounts is going to cause a drop in crystal purchases. So yes, there will be some players running around with 15% protection from everything, but there will also be fewer players with OP kits or highly MU'd equipment, so the overall effect on gameplay is going to be rather small. When developers come out with updates that most of the community seems to dislike, it's not because they're greedy or because they don't care about us. It's because they're making these updates for the good of Tanki in the long run, and sometimes long-term improvement comes with short-term drawbacks.

Why? They seem like a fine way for Tanki to make money to me. It's not like a paint with 15% from everything is going to ruin gameplay.

What do you mean by this? Tanki is a simple project yet one with an incredible amount of depth, and if you find yourself bored in the game, that's probably because you need to try something new. Make some new friends. Reach out by PM to some players you've always admired. Learn a new combination, or immerse yourself in the world of XP/BP if you haven't already. Find a parkour buddy/group and try pulling off some inventive tricks. Join a clan, or start a new one with some friends, and find a way to make it a unique clan, different in some respect from all the others. Hone your writing skills and imaginative abilities and apply for the newspaper team. Or do something entirely different, and add to the community in your own way.

If you compress a spring, wrap a rubber band around it to keep it compressed, and then chuck the whole thing into acid that dissolves it, where does the potential energy go?

Not allowed to have Skype? What do you mean by that?

This point is a very strong one. It's important to remember that Tanki is not a free game.

Is responding to questions with + and - unique to Tanki?

Hm, so it is for the most part unique to Tanki! That's pretty cool  -

MandolinMarc replied to MandolinMarc in Is responding to questions with + and - unique to Tanki? Archive
As you're all surely aware, TO players often use + to respond "yes" to a question, and - to respond "no" to a question. My question is, is this bit of lingo unique to Tanki, or do you see it used anywhere else in the online world? For my part, I've only seen it in Tanki. If it is indeed unique to Tanki, well, that's pretty awesome that we invented a piece of lingo! ^_^ -
[Issue 42] Why a 40% Off Sale is Better than 50% Off
MandolinMarc replied to sonofchrysalis3 in Newspaper Archive
Very thorough work Chrysalis! I especially like your reminder that Tanki isn't free; it just generates revenue through a free-to-play business model. I actually created a thread explaining why I was in support of 40% sales a month ago, give it a read if you like: http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=285104
